BUFFALO, N.Y. - The grand opening of Creekside Village , the University at Buffalo's newest student housing complex , will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 22 in the community building of the complex on Skinnersville Road on the UB North (Amherst) Campus. The fifth apartment-style complex to be built for student housing by UB in five years at no cost to New York State taxpayers , Creekside Village will open this month for graduate and professional students, including married students . The five projects have provided fully furnished apartments for 2,170 students that did not exist five years ago. The $ 11 million Creekside Village project , sponsored by the University at Buffalo Foundation and UB Alumni Association , is comprised of 13 two- story buildings featuring 102 two-bedroom townhouse units and 14 two-bedroom ranch-style units for a total designed occupancy of 232. Medical and dental care will be available, as will be counseling and other services to help the returning vets build self-esteem and confidence. Federal investigators said they found a disconnected vent pipe in the basement room where natural gas built up before a lethal explosion last year at a Silver Spring apartment complex . They have not determined when the pipe was disconnected, why or who did it, but the disconnect would have bypassed a safety feature meant to vent gas from the basement room of the building to the exterior, investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives wrote in a preliminary report on the Aug. 10, 2016, explosion that killed seven people, injured more than 30 and left more than 100 homeless. “The person who disconnected the vent pipe, as well as his/her intentions in doing so, are as of yet to be determined,” investigators wrote in a preliminary report that was made public Tuesday . Frustrated by the shooting — and that police identified Kenneth “Kiwi” Herring as a man — about 40 people gathered outside the building in which Herring was shot Tuesday for a vigil and to express dissatisfaction with a police force they said was disrespectful and too quick to shoot. The vigil evolved into a march from Sherman Park to Kingshighway West neighborhood . Washington State University’s first day of school Monday may have been eclipsed by other cosmic events, but students at the Vancouver campus returned nonetheless for the 2017- 2018 school year . And with it came hints of change for the university, where enrollment is expected to increase in yet another year, continuing a trend. Campus spokeswoman Brenda Alling pointed to several construction projects on the horizon at the Salmon Creek campus . Vancouver Public Schools , after the approval of its $ 458 million bond measure earlier this year, is slated to break ground on its Vancouver iTech Preparatory school campus . The building will be on about 5 acres — leased to the school district for $1 a year — northeast of the main WSU Vancouver campus . If you work in retail — or know someone who does — here’s a scary statistic: Between 20 percent and 25 percent of U.S. malls will close in the next five years, according to predictions from financial analysts. It’s not just jobs that are at stake; sales tax revenue used to pave roads, hire police and light up City Hall is in jeopardy, too. Topping the most vulnerable list: Generic indoor malls of the 1970s and ’80s that have fallen victim to changing consumer tastes and online shopping (thanks, Amazon). But standalone stores aren ’t immune from the downturn, as we’ve seen on the Central Coast. Consider, for example, the Madonna Plaza/SLO Promenade shopping area off Highway 101.
