South Korea’s once-rigorous civilian air-raid drills grow lax

SEOUL, South Korea — Once or twice a year, activity on the streets of South Korea’s capital freezes as a wailing siren marks a nationwide drill aimed at preparing against a North Korean attack . Cars stop on roads. Pedestrians move into buildings and subway stations. Government buildings are evacuated. The scenes during the latest air-raid drill on Wednesday are remarkable for turning parts of this usually bustling city into a ghost town. But a closer look raises questions about whether the exercises are adequately preparing South Koreans while the threat from North Korea’s nuclear and missile program grows . For many, there’s no real training, just people standing around in schoolyards or other gathering spots, staring into their smartphones, chatting amiably or just looking bored or frustrated. Many schools don’t participate in the air-raid drills and those that do often escort children outside. Leaving their buildings would be a good idea during earthquakes, but a terrible deci...

Federal report cites mistakes that led to deaths of two KC firefighters

Kansas City firefighters now take two simple safety steps that might have saved the lives of two colleagues in a 2015 building collapse . The steps were among the recommendations in a federal report released Thursday . Emergency tones are sounded, as they were two years ago, when firefighters are ordered out of a collapse zone. But now heads are counted to make sure everyone got the message — which was not done before. Fire Chief Paul Berardi acknowledged those steps might have saved the lives of John Mesh and Larry Leggio, who perished at a fire scene on Independence Boulevard. The federal report cites a series of operational failures that contributed to the firefighters’ deaths. The report said the two men should not have been in an alley next to the three-story building after all personnel were directed to pull back because of fears the walls would collapse. Six minutes after that order was given, they died in an avalanche of bricks. Poor communication and the failure to establi...

History should unite us, not tear us apart

As a late- blooming Civil War buff , I have mixed feelings about the recently renewed national push to remove Confederate monuments across the nation. On one hand, the removal of hundreds of Confederate and related statues bears a troubling resemblance to efforts by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin or the Islamic State to selectively erase inconvenient history . But when President Donald Trump decided to weigh in on the side of preserving public Confederate icons as “beautiful,” my dilemma vanished. Trump managed to be for them in a way that turned me against them. “Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments,” he wrote in a series of tweets. “You can’t change history, but you can learn from it. Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson — who’s next? Washington, Jefferson? So foolish! Also the beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparabl...

The merit of pointing out abuse in Buddhism: Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche

Image
A common teaching in Tibetan Buddhism suggests that, “if a lama or rinpoche says something wrong, you MUST point it out as wrong.” They might be pure beings, perfect Buddha ’s etc, but right there, right then, they were, “manifesting an opportunity for you to correct them.” This and similar teachings permeate the Buddhist tradition, which is built upon harmonious behavior, careful instruction, reflection, reason, and debate. Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche - Bodhgaya 2014" width="696" height="438" /> Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche – Bodhgaya 2014 With that in mind I point at a few things in Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche ’s recent statement about Sogyal and Vajrayana Buddhism that seem wrong to me. (First, if you haven’t already, go read the statement in full, as per his wishes.) Can’t trust journalists or ‘Buddhist’ magazines Dzongsar Khyentse begins by writing that: Unfortunately, journalists always cut up texts, then pick and choose the bits and pieces that fit ...

Sterling Pointe Apartments - 14 Photos & 15 Reviews - Apartments - 2257 Hurley Way, Arden-Arcade, Sacramento, CA - Phone Number

15 2257 Hurley Way Sacramento , CA 95825 (916) 927-7767 When me and my boyfriend needed a place quick Nathan was able to get us a place and approve us in 2 days!! The management really cares i would give 10 stars if i could! If I could give this place negative stars I would. They don't even deserve 1 star. First of all, They took over 13 days to tell me that I had been approved for an apartment. They didn't even call me to let me know. I had to call them. Then the day I was going to go ahead and put down a holding deposit on an apartment, they had a fire the previous day which obviously means that their first priority is finding a temporary place in vacant apartments so I still did not know if I was actually going to get an apartment. The guy in the front office told me by the end of the day that they would call me and let me know if there would be an apartment for me after all. Low and behold I'm still waiting for that call 1 week later. DO NOT BOTHER APPLYING TO THIS...

How will you care for your aging parents?

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - When aging parents can no longer care for themselves, having a conversation with them about their future is never easy. Fortunately, there are people who have made it their life's mission to help you figure out what your loved ones can afford when it comes to their long-term care, and where they should spend their golden years. When my dad turned 92 years old in August 2016, his suddenly failing health was a rude punch of reality. Up until then, I had seen him as the strong, quick- witted police officer everyone in Trenton, New Jersey, knew. But suddenly it was up to my sister and me to be his caregivers. We did our best until he passed away in January, but the crash course we received in elder care was eye-opening. Senior living arrangements Once adult children get a handle on their parents’ finances, it’s time to figure out what type of care they can afford. My father soon needed more help than a home health aide could provide, and rushing to find the ri...
