Locators work on commission, typically earning about 20 percent of the first month’s rent for their services. But in Houston’s soft market, that figure is rapidly rising. Providence Place Apartments rendering by SGN+A. HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Developers are breaking ground or already at work on several major apartment projects this year across the Huntsville area. The construction activity isn 't surprising to David Wilson, who tracks dozens of apartment complexes with 60 or more units in the local market. "We've had few new construction starts the last few years," he said. "Things are ramping up after a lull." Only 86 apartments were added to the local market in 2011, according to Wilson, a sales agent with Birmingham- based Rock Apartment Advisors and president of The David Wilson Co. in Huntsville. In 2010, 644 apartment units were delivered. Site preparation work started earlier this year at the site of Providence Place Apartments at the northeast corner of Providence Main Street and Biltmore Drive in west Hunts...

At the five-unit condo at 3525 14th St. NW, a new development by Congressional Properties, units are priced from $599,900 to $649,900. (Benjamin C Tankersley/For The Washington Post) Home buyers always hope to purchase at the right moment in the housing market and in the right location, preferably one where new development will add value. Condominiums have been rising for years on streets near the Columbia Heights Metro station and the Georgia Avenue- Petworth Metro station , yet developers always seem to find new locations to squeeze in more. The five-unit condo at 3525 14th St. NW, a new development by Congressional Properties, was a small retail business on the ground floor with an apartment above, says Brian Athey, founder and president of Congressional Properties in Washington. “We like that location a lot because you can walk to Metro very easily and get to restaurants and shops, but the immediate area along 14th Street is still changing pretty quickly ,” Athey says. “We fee...
