Medical and dental care will be available, as will be counseling and other services to help the returning vets build self-esteem and confidence. Two U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development top management representatives from the Birmingham, Ala., field office spent Tuesday afternoon listening to residents’ concerns at a Phenix City low - income apartment complex . Their site visit to Stonewood Apartments off 28th Avenue was sparked by a video posted to YouTube last month that shows a former resident manager berating , cursing and threatening to evict a handicapped tenant who was complaining about a faulty refrigerator. HUD Program Center Director Donna Crane and Chief Project Manager for Multifamily Housing Jalon Rush - Carter began meeting with residents during the lunch hour. They declined to comment, but said this was not a scheduled visit. She wasn't sure what to expect. "I used to think of Park La Brea as being the old people's complex," she recalls. It wasn't long before she fell in love with it. It was Jan. 23, 2004, and she was 19 years old. Lyles lived in the 800-square-foot, two-bedroom apartment with her three children. The family experienced good and bad times at Oakview, keeping mostly to themselves except for associating with some residents a few doors down, Lyles said. Oakview's residents are gone now — the city began demolishing the units last week to make way for the new Dr. T.K. Gregg Community Center . FARMINGTON HILLS Police investigate rash of break-ins at Independence Green and Muirwood apartments Several reports of home invasions in Farmington Hills had police investigating break -ins at the Independence Green and Muirwood apartment complexes . The suspects entered the apartments sometime between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday, police said. They were able to break into the unoccupied apartments by prying sliding glass doors open , police said. The Independence Green apartment complex is off Halsted Road near Grand River Avenue , and Muirwood Apartments is in the area of Drake Road and Grand River Avenue . CLOSE HUD inspects Washington Heights Apartments Washington Heights (Photo: Roger Weeder) JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Federal inspectors were out at Washington Heights Apartments in Jacksonville Tuesday, conducting what management is calling a routine, annual inspection. The federally- subsidized housing complex is owned by the same Tennessee organization under scrutiny for what city leaders have called deplorable conditions at Eureka Gardens , which sparked investigations by city code enforcement and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Global Ministries Foundations owns both complexes, which provide rent-assisted housing through a federal program. At Eureka Gardens , some residents complained of poor maintenance. Inspectors found that some stair cases used to access units at the complex were structurally unsafe and they also uncovered mold in some apartments. Residents at Mallards Landing Retirement Center in East China Township are now able to enjoy an expanded community garden on the grounds thanks to a local boy scout . Vincent Gaytan constructed a paved wheelchair-friendly sidewalk behind the center from the dining hall to the outside raised vegetable garden . He then built two additional raised garden beds and planted vegetables, including lettuce, leeks, banana peppers and eggplant. Gaytan is a Life Scout with Marine City Boy Scout Troop 296 and is working to achieve Eagle Scout status . To achieve the highest rank in Scouting, Gaytan is required to complete an extensive community service project . “I chose to help Mallards Landing because I wanted the residents to be able to have an area to gather and keep active,” Gaytan wrote in a letter seeking donations for the project. “By providing boxes that all can access, my hope is they will keep their minds and bodies active while enjoying a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables.” ...

The new base of operations is located in what the New York City Housing Authority describes as “an existing facility in an underutilized space,” at 152-154 Avenue D. Motivate, the operators of Citi Bike, hope it will lead to a more balanced system, meaning no more showing up to stations to find there are no bikes to rent. But more than a year and a half later, Pfaff is reflecting on how much of a headache that process became. After applying for a one-bedroom unit at the historic South Cathedral Mansions apartment building in Woodley Park, property management staff repeatedly delayed his move-in date and made conflicting statements about what his rent would be, according to a lawsuit Pfaff ’s attorney Aaron Arce Stark filed in D.C. Superior Court this summer. PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – The air conditioning hasn ’t worked for weeks at the Charles Place Apartments in Providence. “It’s extremely hot,” said Sabrina Cooley, a resident of the 200- unit apartment building . “I barely slept at all last night.” Cooley told Call 12 for Action that the heat exacerbated her respiratory problems. She’s been spending time outside to find relief. “It’s warm outside as well, but we’re trying to get some type of a breeze because the inside is extremely hot,” Cooley added. “It’s overbearing.” Call 12 for action went to the building’s manager Georgeanne Keith for answers. “Our residents are important to us, and we want this to be a safe comfortable place to live,” Keith said. MILLVILLE — Oakview Apartment operators are threatening to evict residents in at least 50 units unless their past- due heating bills are paid by the end of the month, the president of the newly formed tenants association says. Nate Sanders said some of the people living in the low- income housing development on East Broad Street near Wade Boulevard owe thousands of dollars for heating bills — but residents believe those numbers are inaccurate. Apartment operators have not given the tenants access to meters so they can check whether their heating bills are accurate, said Sanders, who said he owes more than $2,000. Latest Video Sanders, 53, who said he has been unable to work for years because of injuries suffered in a series of automobile accidents, said he might be able to pay his bill if he gets some financial help from friends.
