ARCOLA -- Carriage Crossing Senior Living community in Arcola has announced that they re-opened the facility on Monday. According to a press release, the assisted living community located at 909 Green Mill Road , at the Green Mill Village development in Arcola, experienced a fire in the attic above the administration offices last summer. Many of the residents moved to the Champaign Carriage Crossing Senior Living community while repairs were made to fix the fire, smoke and water damage to the Arcola facility . "Our residents are delighted to come home to Arcola," stated Executive Director Brenda Hearn . "Likewise, it has been a supportive homecoming from the communities and city officials from Douglas, Coles and Moultrie counties to re-open our doors and offer our state-of-the- art assisted living and memory care services to seniors." Martha's Vineyard Hospital announced last week that they are taking steps to close the independent living facility at Windemere. — MV Times file photo Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (WNRC) has suspended admissions to its independent living facility as it moves to close the 13-bed unit, where three people now live. In a conversation with The Times on Tuesday, Joe Woodin, president and chief executive officer of Martha’s Vineyard Hospital (MVH), was vague about the closure of the independent living facility , owned by the hospital and on the MVH campus in Oak Bluffs. Though Mr. Woodin didn’t say conclusively that the unit will close, he said MVH is exploring the option of closing. “We’re going through the process of strongly analyzing this and looking at the options for closing the unit,” Mr. Woodin said, referring to the independent facility known as Wildflower Court. Residents at Mallards Landing Retirement Center in East China Township are now able to enjoy an expanded community garden on the grounds thanks to a local boy scout . Vincent Gaytan constructed a paved wheelchair-friendly sidewalk behind the center from the dining hall to the outside raised vegetable garden . He then built two additional raised garden beds and planted vegetables, including lettuce, leeks, banana peppers and eggplant. Gaytan is a Life Scout with Marine City Boy Scout Troop 296 and is working to achieve Eagle Scout status . To achieve the highest rank in Scouting, Gaytan is required to complete an extensive community service project . “I chose to help Mallards Landing because I wanted the residents to be able to have an area to gather and keep active,” Gaytan wrote in a letter seeking donations for the project. “By providing boxes that all can access, my hope is they will keep their minds and bodies active while enjoying a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables.” ...
