Police reports: Thief swipes $120 after arranging to sell cellphone to woman at Franklin Park restaurant

The following items were taken from the Franklin Park and Northlake police departments' reports and press releases. An arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt.

Franklin Park

Robbery

•A woman had money stolen when she attempted to purchase an iPhone 6, police said. The woman's daughter had found an iPhone for sale for $200 and contacted the seller about purchasing it. Initially, the seller wanted the woman's daughter to meet at an apartment in the 10500 block of Crown Road to exchange money for the phone. However, after messages were exchanged, the woman told the seller she'd meet him at a Sonic restaurant at 10440 Grand Ave. On Aug. 12, the woman entered the Sonic around 5:39 p.m. and met the man. Once the phone was presented, the woman negotiated the price down to $120 due to its condition. When she pulled six $20 bills out of her purse, the man "grabbed the money in her hand and a struggle ensued over the cash," according to the police report. The man broke free and fled outside of the Sonic toward the apartments on Crown Road. Officers searched the immediate area for the man and recovered a black iPhone 6 with a cracked screen on the floor near the stairwell of the apartment building. Officers describe the man as between 17 and 21 years old, standing 5-foot-9 with black hair that was shaved on the sides with an "Afro on top." He was last seen wearing a black shirt with a white design on it and dark-colored blue jeans and sneakers.

Leaving the Scene

•Franco Sanjuana Gutierrez, 32, of the 1900 block of 18th Avenue, Melrose Park, was charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident in an incident police allege happened at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Gustav Street on Aug. 11 at 4:40 p.m. Gutierrez reportedly drove a black SUV into a street sign and concrete planter before driving away, police said. The front bumper was reportedly recovered, and officers used the license plate to locate Gutierrez and his vehicle, police said.
