Police: Griffith man shot his mother's boyfriend during an argument in their apartment | Crime and Courts

MUNSTER — A 22-year-old man is accused of wounding his mother's boyfriend in a shooting Sunday night at the family's home in Griffith.

Arlie O. Sanson Jr. was charged Monday in Lake Criminal Court with aggravated battery, battery by means of a deadly weapon and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, according to court records.

The shooting occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday at an apartment in the 1100 block of North Arbogast Street.

The defendant's mother told police that she and her live-in boyfriend got into an argument that night after she told her boyfriend to go to bed and he refused, according to a probable cause affidavit.

She said they tussled on the couch before her boyfriend grabbed her in a “bear-hug” and tried to push her off the couch, the affidavit states.

She told him to leave her alone, at which point he walked out of the room toward the kitchen, the affidavit states.

She said she then saw her son armed with a gun, the affidavit states.

The mother said her son told the boyfriend to “leave my mom alone,” according to the affidavit. She said her boyfriend continued walking to the kitchen, at which point Sanson allegedly twice shot him.

The man was transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary, where he was treated for gunshot wounds to the arm and torso, the affidavit states.

Sanson was arrested at about 1 a.m. Monday. He admitted to police in a statement that he shot the man, whom he said was walking toward him when he fired the gun, the affidavit staates.

The son told police his mother's boyfriend was a non-violent person, and the mother said there were no issues between the two men.

Sanson is jailed on a $40,000 bond, according to court records.
