Through my two year stay at Windemere, it deserves a 3 star rating. It served its purpose as a great starter apartment, low in cost compared to many other apartments, and a great location. However, there were always common issues of noisy neighbors, bugs coming in and out, AC mishaps, and breaking doors / cabinets. The response to these issues were always quick and got the job done. I would recommend it as a starter apartment but not long term.
First, I want to say that the maintenance staff here is well-prepared, fast and top notch. They are reliable and generally awesome. As is the office staff. We have a very nice new washer/dryer combo in the the unit. The grounds are pleasant (though they have some drainage issues). And they do an excellent job of keeping the snow plowed in the winter. That being said, I have really, really mixed feelings about this complex. These are relatively pricey apartments and are marketed as fairly high-end. Given that, I have had to encounter the awesome maintenance staff FAR more often than I should have. I think that this is a case where the current management company has come in to deal with previous management that had dropped the ball over time. Since being here, we have had to have our air conditioning unit replaced after it started smoking. The ignitor failed on the furnace. All of the windows and sliding glass door were replaced. (Which was a marvel of coordination and logistics that was really well-done. Kudos again to the top-notch maintenance staff- although some of our blinds haven't worked properly since). They did the same thing to the front door of our unit. The appliances were quite dated when we moved in. The oven seal was gone and the oven was replaced. The disposer died, and also had to be replaced. As was the dishwasher as it started leaking. And no, I am not done yet. One of the bathroom sinks stoppers have rotted off and the sink and faucet needed replacing. The flooring is pulling away from the joists and the entire unit shakes when you walk across the floor. So any movement disturbs our neighbors. They could only partially fix this. And finally, they had to replace the ENTIRE entry stairway. Which was annoying and disruptive. Things not yet reported: brick facade on front of building falling off in spots. Tile in bathrooms poorly replaced prior to our moving in, and getting ready to fall off wall. And to top it off, these units transmit noise- so with the squeaking, shaking floors- life here is becoming like walking on eggshells. Basically, the entire building is being retrofitted around us as we live here. And while I appreciate the efficiency in the way it is done, it is often disruptive given the amount we pay in rent.
I lived at Windemere for five years because the location was convenient for where I worked. But the experience there was average at best. First, the rent is high and will go up a every year despite no upgrades or maintenance to the apartment. The appliances and carpet were all the exact same ones for all five years (and I know it was at least six years because my roommate had lived there a year before I moved in). For the most part the maintenance requests were handled well except for one experience where the furnace broke at 10 PM on a night where it hit -15 degrees F and their solution was to bring three space heaters until the morning when they would address the furnace. Finally, the move out process was HORRIBLE. Every representative we talked with gave us a different interpretation of what our lease termination fee was. When I went online to pay the termination fee it was $0. I thought that seemed suspicious so I emailed and called Windemere. My email went unanswered and phone call un-returned. About a month after I moved out Windemere sent me an email saying I did not pay the termination fee to which I showed them the $0 balance on the online system. There response was that it was a new system and it was a mistake and I did really owe them more money. I thought this was very inconvenient since I had already tried to contact them to try and pay them but was simply ignored. Windemere is a corporation and not a community. They will be prompt when you owe them money but will be slow and do the bare minimum everywhere else. They do have nice pool though.
Very happy with this place! Lived here 4 years, likely live here for at least a couple more. Roomy apartments (HUGE walk in closets, lots of storage, plenty of windows), excellently maintained grounds and facilities (beautiful greenery in summer, and snow quickly and effectively plowed in winter), very attentive and pleasant staff and maintenance. Nice heating/cooling systems, in-apartment washer/dryer/dishwashers. Convenient location ( on the bus route, 10 minute drive from campus, near grocery store/library/coffee shops/highway/etc) in a very green and peaceful area of town. Clubhouse has monthly events (wine tastings, etc) if you're into that. Safe neighborhood. Covered parking for 1 car per apartment, ample open parking for additional cars. Only downside is fireplace is asthetic only, doesn't really generate heat. Reasonably priced (I pay total for apartment $1100/month or so, counting water). Pet-friendly. Really a great place to be, very happy with it.
