Slayings raise specter of neo-Nazi threat in Tampa

TAMPA — The friendship of the four young roommates — though cemented in the dark trappings of an obscure neo- Nazi group called Atomwaffen Division — never seemed destined for bloodshed. One was described as a former science nerd, serving in the Florida National Guard . Two others worked temp jobs at a recycling plant and talked about joining the military. The fourth caught flak from his roommates for wasting his days with video games. Now two of the young men are dead, the other two are in jail and authorities are left to answer this question: Was Atomwaffen Division plotting violent acts or were the four young men merely posers? Just days after police say one of the roommates shot and killed two others on May 19, Atomwaffen posted a video on YouTube depicting members standing with arms extended in “Heil Hitler” salutes and standing with guns in front of a swastika flag, their faces obscured by images of skulls. It ended with a stark slogan: “Join your local Nazis.” Inside the a...

Man farms 100 feet from the Lincoln Tunnel

Here on a hillside farm, a hundred feet from the Lincoln Tunnel, a rooster crowed. It was 8:16 a.m., the peak of the Monday morning crush into New York City. Bus brakes squealed . A trucker's horn boomed out as cars inched down the J-shaped helix and into the tunnel's mouth. The rooster paused; then it crowed again. Konstantinos Natsis, owner of rooster and farm, was busy curling a tomato plant's young green vine around a trellis of white plastic twine . When he turned to look at the traffic jam, his gray eyebrows lifted , as if surprised to see the tunnel — this famous, dirty, diesel-soaked symbol of the city — so close to his sunflowers and pumpkins. "I don't even notice it!" said Natsis, 70, who has farmed this spot in Weehawken for 17 years. "I come here and I plant my vegetables. I eat them, and I give them to my friends. This is all I do," he told The Record (https://njersy.co/2uLdxyU). To be fair, that's not exactly all he does. Natsis a...

Park La Brea, L.A.'s Biggest Apartment Complex, Has Broken Elevators, Insect Infestations and a Waiting List

Image
Ilene Waterstone says Park La Brea is "overpriced projects right now." Photo by Shane Lopes Ilene Waterstone, actor- comedian Steve Martin 's personal assistant, moved into a tower at the Park La Brea Apartments on April Fools' Day in 1992. She wasn't sure what to expect. "I used to think of Park La Brea as being the old people's complex," she recalls. It wasn't long before she fell in love with it. The grounds were lush and well-maintained, her neighbors respectful and neat. Then about two years ago, things went to hell. Elevators in her high- rise building repeatedly broke down, forcing Waterstone , 64 and saddled with chronic orthopedic problems , to trudge up and down floor after floor in a dimly lit stairwell to her eighth-floor apartment. She once made the climb wet and embarrassed after coming home from a water aerobics class to yet another grounded elevator . Rats and cockroaches infested what she says was an increasingly filthy buil...

PLANO, Texas - A man was taken into custody after a SWAT standoff early Tuesday morning in East Plano. The standoff started around 3 a.m. at an apartment complex on Sherrye Drive, which is near 14 th  Street and Jupiter Road. Police said there was some sort of argument between the suspect and another man. The other man was shot in the leg and is expected to survive. The suspect also suffered a hand injury. Think Montford Park is changing now? Wait until this beautiful new trail gets built

Image
When you’re hanging out at Park Road Shopping Center or partying on Montford today, you barely even notice that there’s a creek nearby. But in a few years’ time, this hidden creek will be one of the newest crown jewels of Charlotte. The city is finalizing plans and designs for an extension of the Cross Charlotte Trail through this section of the Park Road corridor . Construction is expected to follow in about 18 months time. When it’s done, thickets of bramble and vines will give way to public parks and greenways with Little Sugar Creek as their centerpiece. The result will be a radically different vibe for a fast-growing part of town. Development has already ramped up in this area of Park Road, between the shopping center and Tyvola Road. The neighborhood has even given itself a new name: Montford Park. But as the trail gets underway, all manner of new apartments, offices and restaurants will sprout up around it to take advantage of the green space it provides. Think the area is ...

Fire Breaks Out at Mission Valley Apartment Complex

An attic fire broke out at an apartment complex in Mission Valley Friday morning , sending fire crews rushing to the scene. The fire began just before 6 a.m. at the two- story Centre Point Apartments in the 6500 block of Friars Road. When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke could be seen stemming from the roof of the building. Fire officials said residents had evacuated safely. Within minutes, the San Diego Fire -Rescue Department (SDFD) upgraded the situation to a two-alarm fire, fearing the flames would spread to the entire length of the attic space. Firefighters created a fire wall to prevent the spreading, cutting holes in the roof of the building to attack the blaze. The tactic worked, and they knocked out the fire within half an hour. San Diego police were called to assist with traffic control in the busy area of Friars Road in both directions. San Diego Gas & Electric officials were also requested on scene. As of 6:30 a.m., officials had shut down eastbound and westbound...

Police shoot transgender woman after reported stabbing in West End of St. Louis

Updated at 5:24 p.m. — Members of the LGBTQ community , activists and advocates are outraged that police shot and killed a transgender black woman this week. Frustrated by the shooting — and that police identified Kenneth “Kiwi” Herring as a man — about 40 people gathered outside the building in which Herring was shot Tuesday for a vigil and to express dissatisfaction with a police force they said was disrespectful and too quick to shoot. The vigil evolved into a march from Sherman Park to Kingshighway West neighborhood . Participants held signs that read “Black Trans Lives Matter.” According to an incident report in which Herring is not named, at about 8 a.m. Tuesday, two police officers responded to a call in the Academy neighborhood that someone had been stabbed on the 5200 block of Ridge Avenue. A 30-year old man who had been cut by a knife told police his attacker was inside the building, the report said. When the two officers entered the building, a person with a knife conf...
