Blotter: Flaming cocktail burns couple at Highland Village bar | News

A couple were airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas on Wednesday with major burns caused by a "flaming cocktail" at the Shoal Creek Tavern in The Shops at Highland Village.

After the couple received the cocktail at the restaurant's bar, an "additional ignition" took place and caused major burns on their body from the waist up, according to Highland Village police spokeswoman Laurie Mullens.

"We don't really have the exact details on what caused the additional ignition," Mullens said. "We just know that something caused it to reignite and burned the two people that had ordered the drink." 

No one else was injured in the incident, and the bar was not damaged, she said. Highland Village emergency services responded to the call about 3:50 p.m. The investigation is ongoing.

Two women hospitalized after disturbance call 

Denton police aren't sure whether two women had been suffering from a mental illness when they were transported to Medical City Denton on Tuesday following a disturbance.   

Police were dispatched to the Arbors at Denton apartments about 10 a.m. based on reports of a woman yelling that she was being held captive, according to the police report. Police arrived at the apartment and, when a resident opened the door, the officers observed a naked woman on a bed, according to department spokesman Shane Kizer. 

He said she had been having hallucinations, and a second woman in the apartment had scratches that she couldn't explain, he said. Those circumstances led police to believe that either drugs or a mental illness played a role, he said. Drugs, however, were not found in plain view in the apartment, he said. 

A total of three women were in the apartment, but only two were hospitalized with injuries that were not life threatening. Criminal charges have not been filed in the case, Kizer said.

500 block of North Loop 288 — A SUV did not stop for police when officers tried to pull the driver over for failing to obey a stop sign, according to a police report.

The driver, who was not identified in the report, was driving too fast to make a complete stop at the intersection of Audra Lane and North Loop 288, the officer said in his report. Police said the suspect fled or attempted to elude the officer. Police later learned the car had been taken from the owner without permission, but the report never specified whether police contacted the suspect after they drove away.

No arrests were made, according to the report.

3400 block of Briercliff Drive — A 35-year-old woman said a suspicious man got into her car on Tuesday and took a credit card without permission, according to a police report.

Officers arrived on the scene and contacted the victim about 6 a.m., but no arrests were made. The report did not provide further information.

The Denton County Sheriff's Office handled 920 service and officer-initiated calls for the agencies it serves, and 42 people were booked into Denton County Jail. 

Denton police handled 160 calls for service and made 10 arrests.
