Suspect arrested in death at Murfreesboro apartment

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A suspect has been arrested and the victim identified following a murder early Tuesday at a Murfreesboro apartment complex.

Christopher Turley, 23, was found shot to death about 5 a.m. at the Stonewood Apartments at 810 East Clark Boulevard.

Police said 22-year-old Anthony P. Smith, of Christiana, was later arrested and booked at the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office on a charge of first-degree murder.

His bond was set at $500,000, and he is due in court April 24.

A motive in the shooting has not been released.

"We believe the center of the shooting occurred at the D building, whether that was inside or outside is still being looked into," said Murfreesboro police spokesman Sgt. Kyle Evans.

Neighbors say Turley was shot multiple times, including possibly in the head.

"We do believe we found the gun used in the fatal shooting," Evans said. "We're looking for other weapons. because if there is one gun, sometimes there are two."

The victim's girlfriend, who was still distraught, was taken to police headquarters to be interviewed, along with another man police say could be a possible witness.

Police say a possible witness was injured and was taken to Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital for minor injuries.

Anyone with information that could further help authorities is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Division at 893-2717 or Crime Stoppers at 893-STOP (7867).

"I heard gunshots but still didn't know what was going on," said Linda Warner, who has lived at the Stonewood Apartments for several months.

Warner is now worried about her grandchildren.

"You could be coming around the building and anything can happen," Warner said. "Bullets don't have eyes."

Tenant Buddy Wisdom said the safety of his family comes first.

"I'm concerned for my safety and my child's safety," Wisdom said. "If they get out here and start shooting crazy, hell, they can shoot right through these apartments. They are not made of nothing. It's not a safe place at all."

Wisdom said now there has been a murder, he has no reason to stick around. He's moving out.
