Newport officer attacked while booking burglary suspect, police say

A Newport police officer was attacked Tuesday night while booking a burglary suspect, police said.

Newport police said Ryan Gobin, 18, of Newport, was arrested after police received reports around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday of a man going through cars in the area of the Newport Village Apartments on Whipple Road.

Officers investigating in the area were called to a home a short distance away on Sunapee Street by someone saying that a man was trying to get into the house. Police said the person ran away, but another active burglary was reported at Pinnacle Bait and Tackle.

Newport police and state police searched the area and said they saw a man running away from the business. After a brief struggle, officers took the man into custody, police said.

The man was identified as Gobin, and police said they found evidence that linked him to the other reports.

While Gobin was being booked and police were administering a breath test, he attacked a police officer, officials said. Officer Dakota Titorenko was briefly choked before Gobin was restrained, police said.

"The subject shoved the officer and during the attempt to take him into custody. The subject actually choked our officer," Newport Police Lt. Matthew Hogan said.

Titorenko suffered minor injuries and was able to return to duty, police said.

"There was an assault that was committed against one of our officers in the booking area. The subject shoved the officer and during the attempt to take him into custody, the subject actually choked our officer," Hogan said.

Gobin is charged with attempted burglary, resisting arrest, simple assault, second-degree assault, theft and breach of bail. Police said he was out on bail on unrelated charges, but that bail order was revoked.

Police said they're investigating other burglary reports in the area, and Gobin may face additional charges.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Newport police with further information.
