Groundbreaking for the new Highland Village senior housing complex took place Tuesday afternoon at the site of the former Highland Heights Dale Elementary school near Northern Kentucky University.

Rep. Dennis Keene (D-Wilder) secured $500,000 in affordable housing funding from the state, working with the property development and management non-profit organization, Neighborhood Foundations.

Tom Guidugli, executive director of Neighborhood Foundations, and Mike Chalk, chairman of the board of commissioners of Neighborhood Foundations, were also on hand for the groundbreaking.

Neighborhood Foundation’s mission is to provide and develop quality affordable housing opportunities while revitalizing neighborhoods.

Highland Village will provide 118 apartment units for senior citizens. Fourteen two-bedroom and 104 one-bedroom apartments will be available, allowing Highland Heights seniors to stay close to home.

“Today we broke ground for a wonderful new senior citizen affordable housing project in Highland Heights,” said Keene. “Seniors are our mothers and fathers and it’s up to us to help and take care of the most vulnerable in our society. It’s our duty and I’m proud to have a hand in bringing this project to our community.”
