Police: Wanted Sunbury man assaulted officers before capture | Local News

SUNBURY — A wanted city man allegedly assaulted two police officers and called himself a racist to hospital staff after a scuffle at a Sunbury apartment, according to police.

Mark Trego, 46, was arrested by city police after they were dispatched on Aug. 17 to a Third Street home for reports of a disturbance.

When Cpl. Brad Hare arrived, he attempted to speak with Trego who allegedly tried to fight Hare, police said.

Sgt. James Taylor arrived and, after speaking with Hare, attempted to speak with Trego who was standing on top of steps outside a landing of the apartment, police said.

Trego kept attempting to fight with police but Taylor then began to walk up the steps and when he got near Trego, Trego struck Taylor, knocking the officer's glasses off, police said.

Hare and Taylor both needed to use force to subdue Trego, who had been drinking for two days, according to statements his girlfriend made to police.

The woman told police Trego was drunk and was attempting to light the house on fire, according to court documents.

The woman told Trego she was going to call police and Trego told her he had a knife and he would use it on officers if they arrived, according to the charges. She believed Trego may have been having seizures, police said.

After police subdued Trego and placed him in a police vehicle, he was transported to Snyder County Prison on an outstanding warrant, police said.

A short time after Trego was at the jail, Hare received a call from jail officials that Trego was transported to Sunbury Community Hospital where he was acting combative with nursing staff, according to court documents.

Trego was allegedly surrounded by prison staff at the hospital when Hare arrived, police said. Hare said Trego was yelling profanities at the staff and others while inside the emergency room.

Trego then allegedly began to use racial slurs against a doctor and called himself a racist and that he was proud of it, according to police.

Hare and Taylor once again had to subdue Trego while a doctor attempted to administer care, police said.

Trego was charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault, two felony counts of criminal attempt to commit arson, a misdemeanor charge of simple assault, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, harassment and disorderly conduct.

Trego was then placed back inside Snyder County Prison.
