WSUV opens doors on 2017-18 school year

Washington State University’s first day of school Monday may have been eclipsed by other cosmic events, but students at the Vancouver campus returned nonetheless for the 2017- 2018 school year . And with it came hints of change for the university, where enrollment is expected to increase in yet another year, continuing a trend. Campus spokeswoman Brenda Alling pointed to several construction projects on the horizon at the Salmon Creek campus . Vancouver Public Schools , after the approval of its $ 458 million bond measure earlier this year, is slated to break ground on its Vancouver iTech Preparatory school campus . The building will be on about 5 acres — leased to the school district for $1 a year — northeast of the main WSU Vancouver campus . Construction is projected to begin in June 2018, according to VPS’ website. The iTech middle school campus is currently at 2901 Falk Rd., in Vancouver, while high school students attend classes at the Clark College building at WSU Vancouv...

Food is a necessity, but with the local launch of grocery delivery services Instacart and UberEATS (the food delivery branch of the popular ride service ) last week, Tucson residents need not walk farther than the front door to get it. Instacart Senior Operations Manager David Holyoak said customers can log onto the company's website, fill a virtual grocery cart and choose when they want their food delivered. Orders are then delivered in as little as one hour, or up to seven days in advance. Holyoak added that customers can log onto the Instacart website and see if the service is offered in their area. If not, the company receives a message indicating that people in an un-served area are interested in the service. "The people of Tucson really requested that we be there," he said. So, to Tucson they came, where they are partnering with Bashas', Whole Foods Market, Petco, Natural Grocers, CVS, Fry's and Costco—without a membership. Economically, the service cou...

Homeless group close to suit over bike path plan in Uptown

Image
The more than three dozen people who live in tents under the Lake Shore Drive bridges at Wilson and Lawrence avenues know better than anyone that the structures need repair. Concrete from the Depression-era bridges is crumbling onto the sidewalks and streets below, posing a deadly hazard to tent-dwellers, as well as motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. So it may seem strange that a homeless advocacy group might sue the city to stop bridge repairs before they start in mid-September. But attorneys for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless want to stop the city's plans to put bike paths on the wide sidewalks under the bridges, which the coalition said would permanently drive the homeless out. "If they put the bike paths in, we ain't going to have room for our tents," said Thomas Gordon, 58, who lives under the Lawrence bridge. The sidewalks can currently accommodate both tents and pedestrians — bike paths would cut the space. The dilemma highlights two local tren...

Future development of Cardiff Bay needs a more coordinated approach to ensure its success, the man behind its reinvention 30 years ago has said. Lord Crickhowell has hailed the overall regeneration of the former derelict docklands as a major success. But he is fiercely opposed to the latest plans to redevelop land for flats, including a 24-story building. Three decades after he sparked plans for one of the biggest overhauls the city has seen, what has been achieved? Image caption Cardiff Bay waterfront in 1977 - derelict before regeneration Once the epicentre of Wales' booming coal and export industries, by the 1980s, Cardiff Bay had become an abandoned wasteland of derelict docks and mudflats. A victim of a dramatic fall in trade following World War Two and competition from other ports saw its decline and a plan was put in place to bring it back to lif...
