On the morning that Alfonso Maldonado Silva was set to argue his first case before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena, Ca., he was too nervous to even drink a glass of juice for breakfast. So he decided to head to court early to review the case one last time. He said a short prayer asking for wisdom, then he showered, dressed in a neatly pressed gray suit , and on an overcast morning last April, headed out the door with his evidence binder in hand. He had been up since 5 a.m. Maldonado, a third- year law student at Western State College of Law in Orange County, had left nothing to chance. This would be his first time arguing a case in court before any judge. So he had arrived the night before to stay in a Pasadena hotel to avoid the clogged commute from his Corona apartment during rush-hour. The only thing on the 28-year-old’s mind was the law. Much was riding on this case. Maldonado and his fellow law student , Cristel Martinez Medina , were representing an undocumente...

Parents of Santa Maria boy were engaged in divorce battle

The parents of a 9-year-old Santa Maria boy who was the focus of an Amber Alert search this week were engaged in bitter divorce proceedings and had a court hearing scheduled for Thursday. Konstantin Morozov, 48, and his ex-wife, Natalia Morozova, were both shot to death this week — Morozova was allegedly killed by her former spouse Monday night in Santa Maria, and Morozov was shot and killed in an officer-involved shooting in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. Santa Barbara County Superior Court documents identify the couple as the parents of 9-year-old Daniel Morozov, the subject of the Amber Alert that was issued early Tuesday , hours after police were summoned to the Arbolinda Apartments on North College Drive in Santa Maria, where Natalia Morozova was found dead. Santa Maria police have not confirmed Morozova was the woman fatally shot Monday night , but her identification has been shared widely on social media, and a memorial service was held for her Tuesday. Authorities issued...

The archives belonging to Luis Gómez Sanz, a lawyer born in 1913 in the western city of Salamanca, were discovered on July 20 by José María Uría Fernández with the socially progressive Anastasio de Gracia Foundation (Agfitel). “I was out walking when I came across a container filled with papers,” he says. “The caretaker of the building told me they were from an apartment that was being refurbished. There were other papers, but they had already been taken by junk men.” When Uría Fernández began to sift through the material, he could hardly believe his eyes. “There are around 20,000 documents and 74 books,” he says, adding that they are to be handed over to researchers. About 20,000 historic documents and 74 books were found in the trash Among the literature is a 1749 edition of Dialogues from Spanish humanist and philosopher Juan Luis Vives . Gómez Sanz was both a state attorney and prosecutor as well as secretary to the board of directors for Spain’s national heritage during the pri...

Homeless group close to suit over bike path plan in Uptown

The more than three dozen people who live in tents under the Lake Shore Drive bridges at Wilson and Lawrence avenues know better than anyone that the structures need repair. Concrete from the Depression-era bridges is crumbling onto the sidewalks and streets below, posing a deadly hazard to tent-dwellers, as well as motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. So it may seem strange that a homeless advocacy group might sue the city to stop bridge repairs before they start in mid-September. But attorneys for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless want to stop the city's plans to put bike paths on the wide sidewalks under the bridges, which the coalition said would permanently drive the homeless out. "If they put the bike paths in, we ain't going to have room for our tents," said Thomas Gordon, 58, who lives under the Lawrence bridge. The sidewalks can currently accommodate both tents and pedestrians — bike paths would cut the space. The dilemma highlights two local tren...
