The refinancing of the mixed- income senior citizen community preserves the affordability of the property’s 100 affordable units through 2034. Groundbreaking for the new Highland Village senior housing complex took place Tuesday afternoon at the site of the former Highland Heights Dale Elementary school near Northern Kentucky University . Rep. Dennis Keene (D-Wilder) secured $500,000 in affordable housing funding from the state, working with the property development and management non-profit organization, Neighborhood Foundations. Tom Guidugli, executive director of Neighborhood Foundations, and Mike Chalk, chairman of the board of commissioners of Neighborhood Foundations, were also on hand for the groundbreaking. Neighborhood Foundation’s mission is to provide and develop quality affordable housing opportunities while revitalizing neighborhoods. Residents at Mallards Landing Retirement Center in East China Township are now able to enjoy an expanded community garden on the grounds thanks to a local boy scout . Vincent Gaytan constructed a paved wheelchair-friendly sidewalk behind the center from the dining hall to the outside raised vegetable garden . He then built two additional raised garden beds and planted vegetables, including lettuce, leeks, banana peppers and eggplant. Gaytan is a Life Scout with Marine City Boy Scout Troop 296 and is working to achieve Eagle Scout status . To achieve the highest rank in Scouting, Gaytan is required to complete an extensive community service project . “I chose to help Mallards Landing because I wanted the residents to be able to have an area to gather and keep active,” Gaytan wrote in a letter seeking donations for the project. “By providing boxes that all can access, my hope is they will keep their minds and bodies active while enjoying a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables.” ...

BARCELONA, Spain — The Latest on the Spain attacks (all times local): 5:15 a.m. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has asked people to pray for a young Australian boy who is missing after a vehicle attack on a popular Barcelona promenade that killed 13 people. Turnbull said Saturday that the boy's mother was badly injured and is in a hospital following Friday's attack at the Las Ramblas promenade . Turnbull says the boy's family is searching for him. He did not release the boy's name. Turnbull says: "All of us as parents know the anguish his father is going through, and his whole family is going through, as they rush to seek to find him in Barcelona."
