$197 million Mariposa District transforms public housing from “projects” to community

The Tapiz at Mariposa apartment project , part of Denver Housing Authority ’s Mariposa District redevelopment project in the Alma Lincoln Park neighborhood . (Kevin J. Beaty/Denverite) People who are now happy to call the Mariposa District home would have tried to avoid the area in the not so distant past. “The projects came in here in 1952,” said Bob Cordova, a resident at the Tapiz at Mariposa. “This was the meanest goddamn area of Denver growing up, and it only got worse.” Cordova said he moved to the 100-unit Tapiz apartment building not long after the eight- story senior housing project was completed in 2011. “It feels safe in the area now,” Cordova said. The Tapiz was the first of eight redevelopment phases that Denver Housing Authority undertook to demolish and replace its 250- unit South Lincoln Park Homes . Several residents refer to the former complex as “the projects.” South Lincoln Homes complex along Navajo Street before they were demolished for the Mariposa Distr...

Extra Space Storage in Wicker Park"> Extra Space Storage in Wicker Park. " /> Extra Space Storage in Wicker Park View Full Caption WICKER PARK —  You can now store all your extra stuff close to home. The new Extra Space Storage in the former Wieboldt's department store building features more than 1,200 units. "Self storage is driven by life needs. You are moving, between apartments. Some tenants stay longer than expected, some always have a storage locker . It's becoming a part of people's lives," said John Mengel, owner of JSM Venture, a prominent developer of self- storage facilities . Mengel said more than 40 people rented storage units during the new location's first few weeks and that points to the fact neighborhood residents — particularly the "younger and more mobile" — needed the "extra space." Extra Space Storage opened in late July at 1300 N. Ashland Ave. in the Wicker Commons shopping mall . Th...

Amazon makes Seattle America’s biggest company town

Amazon’s extraordinary growth has turned Seattle into the biggest company town in America. Amazon now occupies a mind-boggling 19 percent of all prime office space in the city, the most for any employer in a major U.S. city, according to a new analysis conducted for The Seattle Times. Amazon’s footprint in Seattle is more than twice as large as any other company in any other big U.S. city, and the e-commerce giant’s expansion here is just getting started. The swarms of 20-somethings crowding into South Lake Union every morning represent an urban campus that is unparalleled in the United States — and they have helped transform Seattle , for better or worse. Amazon’s rapid rise has fueled an economy that has driven up wages and lowered unemployment, but also produced gridlock on the roads and sky- high housing prices . And while Seattle’s booming economy is often attributed to a wide variety of factors, increasingly, it’s all about one company. Amazon now occupies more office space t...
