NTSB documents offer insight but no cause for Silver Spring building explosion that killed 7

Image
Federal investigators said they found a disconnected vent pipe in the basement room where natural gas built up before a lethal explosion last year at a Silver Spring apartment complex . They have not determined when the pipe was disconnected, why or who did it, but the disconnect would have bypassed a safety feature meant to vent gas from the basement room of the building to the exterior, investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives wrote in a preliminary report on the Aug. 10, 2016, explosion that killed seven people, injured more than 30 and left more than 100 homeless. “The person who disconnected the vent pipe, as well as his/her intentions in doing so, are as of yet to be determined,” investigators wrote in a preliminary report that was made public Tuesday . ATF investigators, who are working with the National Transportation Safety Board in its investigation of the incident, said that the cause of the explosion and fire that followed are undete...

Stanford to pay up to $5 million for bike/ped Caltrain crossing at Middle Avenue | News

As part of preliminary terms of a development agreement between Stanford and the city of Menlo Park, Stanford officials have said the university will pay for half of the cost – up to a maximum of $5 million – to build a tunnel or overpass to allow safe crossing of the Caltrain tracks at Middle Avenue in Menlo Park. The Menlo Park City Council is expected to consider the terms of the development agreement for Stanford's proposed project a 500 El Camino Real at its meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 29. Under the proposed agreement, the city will administer the crossing project , but Stanford will help pay for it. A study by consultants from the transportation firm AECOM to develop preliminary designs for the crossing is in progress. The university also agreed to provide additional below-market- rate housing – a total of 10 units, two or three units beyond what is required as part of the city's below-market-rate ordinance – and to donate $1 million, or $100,000 for 10 years...

Image
SALEM — The door to Naumkeag Ordinary was padlocked Tuesday, signaling the apparent closing of the small downtown restaurant . Hours later, a protest on behalf of one of the restaurant’s workers triggered a police response at the business owner’s apartment. On Wednesday, two City Council candidates — Ward 2’s Brendan Murphy and Ward 3’s Lisa Peterson — have apologized for their role in the event. The protest centered around an employee who alleges the business owes her $1,500 in unpaid wages. She was supported by the Lynn Worker Center and North Shore Labor Council , according to Katie Cohen, an organizer with the council. The restaurant’s owner, Matt Brady, did not return calls seeking comment . At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, a crowd of a couple dozen people gathered at the Washington Street restaurant carrying signs targeting Brady and accusing him of wage theft. Eventually, as they realized Brady was not there, they headed for his apartment at 11 Turner St. Brady lives ...

The Vanilla Villa: Orsini Apartments, Cesar Chavez Avenue & Figueroa Street, Downtown

Image
Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 9 a.m. Figueroa Street , Downtown" /> Wendy Gilmartin Even before construction crews broke ground on the Orsini apartment complex back in 2001, its developers made themselves locally infamous for wriggling out of an inclusionary zoning provision that requires new residential apartment developments to contain at least 15 percent affordable units . (Attorneys on the developer's side argued the provision would cause "difficulties and hardships" by lowering the owners' cash flow.) Flash forward 11 years later (and two additional phases and two enormous additional buildings later) and the Orsini apartments at Figueroa Street and Cesar Chavez Avenue downtown are currently more than 15 percent vacant. They also host one of the hottest parking garages in town for car break-ins and petty criminal activity . Aside from its politically contentious past and crime riddled present , what makes the Orsini " apartment resort "...

New Yorkers Are Fleeing To Los Angeles In Droves, Study Shows

Image
NEW YORK, NY — It's one of the oldest rivalries in American migration: New York vs. Los Angeles. For the better part of a century, residents of the nation's two largest metro areas have been defending their chosen kingdom and dismissing the other on an endless loop of judginess between kitty-corner coasts. Ew, the traffic! But the sunshine! But the subway! But the garbage! But the skyline! But the coastline! But the bustle! But the chill! In this tireless war of words, a clear winner has yet to emerge. But it's harder to argue against the numbers. Thousands of working professionals have relocated to Los Angeles County from New York City in the past year and a half, according to a series of monthly "workforce reports" released this spring and summer by the job- networking site LinkedIn (and spotted by LA Weekly). And it's not exactly a two-way street. Since early 2016, according to LinkedIn, around seven or eight out of every 10, 000 site users in LA report...
