How Atlanta attorneys are helping kids stay in school

Kids in low- income neighborhoods tend to change schools more often than their peers. And studies show that can have a detrimental effect on their education. So this past year, one public school in Atlanta tried to break the trend — by providing families with lawyers. At Thomasville Heights Elementary School , in southeast Atlanta , Christal Reynolds and Ayanna Jones-Lightsy have just started their day. Reynolds, a community advocate, is already on the phone. She’s talking to a parent who needs her apartment windows replaced . “If you can today, call that repair line,” she said. “And please ask for a confirmation number.” Meanwhile, Jones-Lightsy, an attorney, pulls a stack of documents out of a file cabinet. She said, they’re apartment building inspections acquired through an open records request . “We requested a lot to go back and do comparisons,” Jones-Lightsy said, “what they claimed has been fixed and may not have been fixed, and what has actually been fixed.” Jones-Lightsy a...

New housing brings fresh start for some former Oakview residents - News - GoUpstate

Alyssa Mulliger Staff Writer @AMulligerSHJ Spartanburg native Tamela Lyles remembers the exact date she moved into unit No. 310 at Oakview Apartments in the city’s Northside neighborhood. It was Jan. 23, 2004, and she was 19 years old. Lyles lived in the 800-square-foot, two-bedroom apartment with her three children. The family experienced good and bad times at Oakview, keeping mostly to themselves except for associating with some residents a few doors down, Lyles said. Oakview's residents are gone now — the city began demolishing the units last week to make way for the new Dr. T.K. Gregg Community Center . While some former residents say the apartments provided a needed home, they also say moving has brought welcome changes and opened up a new life to them. Built in the late 1940s and early 1950s along Howard Street, the federally subsidized, low- income apartments lacked central air conditioning and had tiled floors and cinder block walls . Over the ...

Natomas Meadows & The Willow Glen Apartments

The housing market got so bad Pardee Homes mothballed its 660- home Natomas project in early November. But just down the block, beyond the builder’s vacant model homes , construction is already under way on its Willow Glen Apartment complex . Pardee is going forward with plans to finish the 135- unit apartment complex at its Natomas site to meet affordable housing requirements . The financing of Willow Glen Apartments was complete Sept. 27 and building permits issued on Dec. 11 by the City of Sacramento. While the builder has a two-year deadline to complete the low- income housing project , inclusionary housing rules require the apartments be done before all the market rate homes are complete. Although market conditions led to the single- family home project ’s temporary (?) demise, officials from apartment management company , Chelsea, do not expect the slowdown to have a negative impact on Willow Glen. In fact, Chelsea representatives plan to visit the area this spring to b...

The Tapiz at Mariposa apartment project , part of Denver Housing Authority ’s Mariposa District redevelopment project in the Alma Lincoln Park neighborhood . (Kevin J. Beaty/Denverite) People who are now happy to call the Mariposa District home would have tried to avoid the area in the not so distant past. “The projects came in here in 1952,” said Bob Cordova, a resident at the Tapiz at Mariposa. “This was the meanest goddamn area of Denver growing up, and it only got worse.” Cordova said he moved to the 100-unit Tapiz apartment building not long after the eight- story senior housing project was completed in 2011. “It feels safe in the area now,” Cordova said. The Tapiz was the first of eight redevelopment phases that Denver Housing Authority undertook to demolish and replace its 250- unit South Lincoln Park Homes . Several residents refer to the former complex as “the projects.” South Lincoln Homes complex along Navajo Street before they were demolished for the Mariposa Distr...
