ICYMI: Al Capone’s Park Slope Home Is For Sale

Image
PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — If you've ever wanted to live in the old Brooklyn home of a notorious gangster, you've got a chance to do it. The Park Slope home where Al Capone used to live is up for sale, and it will only cost you a cool $2.5 million to move in. Capone grew up in a nearby building on Garfield Place, according to realtor.com, and moved into this listing in the early 1900s. "If he had lived here today, he wouldn’t have to go into the rum-running business," listing agent Bren Salamon told Patch . That's because Capone could make some serious dough from the two rental units attached to the condo, which could bring in a pretty penny in 2017 Park Slope . Anyone who moves in, though, won't be looking at any old relics of Brooklyn gone by. The home, as many are in the borough these days, was completely renovated by an investor about a year ago. The main townhouse is 2, 980 square feet spread over two levels. Along with three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, t...

Lee Radziwill Is Selling Her Chic Paris Apartment – WWD

Image
Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ younger sister Lee Radziwill has listed her longtime chic Paris apartment for sale, asking 3.4 million euros. Located on the sixth floor of a building dating back to 1890, the 1,625-square-foot, three- bedroom apartment comes with a large balcony that overlooks Avenue Montaigne  and boasts a bird’s eye view of the Eiffel Tower. A source told the New York Post that the 84-year-old, who was once European royalty thanks to her second marriage to a Polish prince, doesn’t spend enough time at the apartment any more, and prefers to stay at the Plaza Athénée. Once an interior designer to the super wealthy, the socialite decorated the pied-à-terre herself, with features including a spacious light- filled living room with built-in bookshelves and mint green curtains framing French doors that open out to the balcony. There is also a large gilded mirror over the fireplace in the living area, a large table with stacks of coffee-table books and a lot of patterned...

New Yorkers Are Fleeing To Los Angeles In Droves, Study Shows

Image
NEW YORK, NY — It's one of the oldest rivalries in American migration: New York vs. Los Angeles. For the better part of a century, residents of the nation's two largest metro areas have been defending their chosen kingdom and dismissing the other on an endless loop of judginess between kitty-corner coasts. Ew, the traffic! But the sunshine! But the subway! But the garbage! But the skyline! But the coastline! But the bustle! But the chill! In this tireless war of words, a clear winner has yet to emerge. But it's harder to argue against the numbers. Thousands of working professionals have relocated to Los Angeles County from New York City in the past year and a half, according to a series of monthly "workforce reports" released this spring and summer by the job- networking site LinkedIn (and spotted by LA Weekly). And it's not exactly a two-way street. Since early 2016, according to LinkedIn, around seven or eight out of every 10, 000 site users in LA report...

The unlikely story of the undocumented attorneys fighting for the lives of their undocumented clients – ThinkProgress

On the morning that Alfonso Maldonado Silva was set to argue his first case before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena, Ca., he was too nervous to even drink a glass of juice for breakfast. So he decided to head to court early to review the case one last time. He said a short prayer asking for wisdom, then he showered, dressed in a neatly pressed gray suit , and on an overcast morning last April, headed out the door with his evidence binder in hand. He had been up since 5 a.m. Maldonado, a third- year law student at Western State College of Law in Orange County, had left nothing to chance. This would be his first time arguing a case in court before any judge. So he had arrived the night before to stay in a Pasadena hotel to avoid the clogged commute from his Corona apartment during rush-hour. The only thing on the 28-year-old’s mind was the law. Much was riding on this case. Maldonado and his fellow law student , Cristel Martinez Medina , were representing an undocumente...
