"He couldn't tell what it was, and then he looked and saw that it was a baby," said sheriff's office spokesman Jason Spencer . "He found a baby girl still with the umbilical cord on, lying on the ground." That man, Albert Peterson, told KHOU he at first thought the sound was coming from a toy. When he picked up the baby, she was still covered in blood and mucus and had ants all over her. The Olympics Are Always A Disaster For Poor People

Image
RIO DE JANEIRO ― Seven years ago, Vila Autódromo was little more than a tranquil fishing village on the edge of Jacarepagua Lagoon, next to the racetrack for which it was named. Like the hundreds of other favelas that dot Rio de Janeiro ’s landscape, it had long been neglected by the city government , and it lacked many basic public services that are standard in the fast- growing wealthier neighborhoods just across the water. But to the more than 600 families that lived there, it was home. “This was a paradise,” said Luiz Cláudio Silva, who lived in Autódromo for more than 20 years. “I thought that I would live here for the rest of my life.” By the time the Rio Olympics are over, just 20 of the families who lived in Autódromo in 2009, the year the International Olympic Committee chose the city to host the games, will remain. The community, which sits less than a mile away from Rio’s Olympic Park, was crushed so that the city could build new access roads to connect Olympic venues . ...

Bay breezes cool Quonset huts and waterfront estates alike in North Kingstown Donita Naylor Journal Staff Writer donita22 NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — This little place between Wickford Village and the Quonset Business Park covers three neighborhoods and two developments, and among them are a wide variety of housing types. The land that can be reached from Post Road by Camp Avenue has the neighborhoods of Wickford Point and Shore Acres, as well as the Mill Creek Townhouses , the Cedarhurst condominiums and the owner-occupied, affordable, Asqah cooperative. There are plenty of single- family houses ranging in size from tiny to expansive, a few duplexes and even three Quonset huts built in 1942 that are 528- or 657-square-foot "cottages." (Named for the Navy base where they were first mass-produced, Quonset huts were easy-to- assemble portable buildings that were shipped around the world during World War II.) When Roger Williams paddled down Narragansett Bay from his hom...
