USC Trojans' Josh Shaw suspended indefinitely after admitting to lie

Aug 28, 2014 USC senior cornerback Josh Shaw has admitted to lying about how he suffered his ankle injuries last weekend and has been suspended indefinitely , the school said in a statement Wednesday. Shaw said he suffered a pair of high ankle sprains Saturday night after jumping from the second story of an apartment complex to save his 7-year-old nephew, who was struggling in the pool. Shaw said his nephew did not know how to swim. He admitted to team officials on Wednesday that the story was a complete fabrication. Head coach Steve Sarkisian said Tuesday the school received several calls questioning the authenticity of Shaw's story and had been investigating the matter. Downtown business owners and residents told the Portland City Council on Wednesday night that problems caused by aggressive panhandlers , mentally ill people and individuals under the influence of drugs or alcohol have reached crisis proportions , and that steps must be taken quickly to preserve the vibrant atmosphere that has made Maine’s largest city a popular destination for tourists and new businesses. Councilors said that although mental illness , substance abuse and homelessness have been problems in Portland since the state began closing mental health institutions in the 1980s – putting people with severe mental health issues on the streets – the city will need help from the community and the state to ensure that members of society’s most vulnerable population get the help and services they need. Police Surround Home in Willow Glen Area of San Jose in Apparent Standoff: Source

Heavy police activity was seen in the Willow Glen area of San Jose late Wednesday night , with officers surrounding an apartment near Lincoln Avenue and Willow Glen Way on reports of a shooting. Sources said there was a gunman inside a home on Laura Ville Lane , and SWAT teams were called in to surround the home. Police were negotiating with the suspect to surrender. Later, at least one gunshot was heard, and sources told NBC Bay Area the gunman shot himself after shooting two people inside the home. Police had not confirmed any fatalities late Wednesday night , but sources were saying at least three people were dead, including the gunman.   No further details were available. LOS ANGELES – The heroic tale of USC cornerback Josh Shaw rescuing his nephew from drowning turned out to be a lie. What exactly happened that night, causing Shaw to injure both of his ankles, remains unclear. Shaw admitted to school officials Wednesday afternoon that he fabricated the story posted on USC’s website, ending a two-day whirlwind of rumors and speculation. Shaw was suspended indefinitely from all team activities. “We are extremely disappointed in Josh,” USC coach Steve Sarkisian said in a statement. “He let us all down. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) —  A pair of Confederate flags hanging in the windows of a residential building are raising tensions in the East Village. Neighbors said the two Confederate flags, that hang next to Israeli and American flags, have been in the sixth floor windows of 403 East 8th Street for more than a year, but many are angered by the sight following the events in Charlottesville over the weekend. Shooting at Eagle Landing Apartments

 One man was shot in the head and another received a gunshot wound to the hand during a shooting incident Wednesday night at Eagle Landing Apartments . Police have a man they said was responsible for the shootings in custody.      Ted William Bailey Jr ., 21, Eagle Landing Apartments , was first rushed to East Georgia Regional Medical Center , then flown by helicopter to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah for treatment of a gunshot wound to the head, said Statesboro Police Capt . L. C. Squabble over barbecue pit fire led to neighbor's stabbing, fatal encounter with St. Louis police | Law and order

ST. LOUIS • New details are emerging from police about the neighbor dispute that brought police Tuesday to the home of Kenny “Kiwi” Herring, who was then killed in a confrontation with officers. In court documents filed in St. Louis Circuit Court , police say Herring had accused a downstairs neighbor that morning of starting a fire on a back deck. Herring then stabbed that neighbor after Herring’s partner provided the kitchen knife, police say. Herring was fatally shot by police after Herring, in a scuffle with officers, cut an officer on the arm. Herring’s partner, Kristy Lynn Thompson , is jailed on assault charges for handing the knife to Herring. And the neighbor who was stabbed was hospitalized with stab wounds. The victim suffered a collapsed lung in the attack, police say.
