BUFFALO, N.Y. - The grand opening of Creekside Village , the University at Buffalo's newest student housing complex , will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 22 in the community building of the complex on Skinnersville Road on the UB North (Amherst) Campus. The fifth apartment-style complex to be built for student housing by UB in five years at no cost to New York State taxpayers , Creekside Village will open this month for graduate and professional students, including married students . The five projects have provided fully furnished apartments for 2,170 students that did not exist five years ago. The $ 11 million Creekside Village project , sponsored by the University at Buffalo Foundation and UB Alumni Association , is comprised of 13 two- story buildings featuring 102 two-bedroom townhouse units and 14 two-bedroom ranch-style units for a total designed occupancy of 232. Washington State University’s first day of school Monday may have been eclipsed by other cosmic events, but students at the Vancouver campus returned nonetheless for the 2017- 2018 school year . Campus spokeswoman Brenda Alling pointed to several construction projects on the horizon at the Salmon Creek campus . Vancouver Public Schools , after the approval of its $ 458 million bond measure earlier this year, is slated to break ground on its Vancouver iTech Preparatory school campus . The building will be on about 5 acres — leased to the school district for $1 a year — northeast of the main WSU Vancouver campus . GREENWICH, Conn.--( BUSINESS WIRE )-- Wheelock Street Capital announced today that a joint venture between affiliates of Wheelock Street and Iconic Development recently acquired Terrace View Apartments , a student housing complex in Blacksburg, Virginia. Blacksburg is the home of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (“ Virginia Tech ”), and Terrace View Apartments serves as a prime source of housing for Virginia Tech’s undergraduate and graduate student populations. On May 25 th , the joint venture acquired Terrace View Apartments from affiliates of The Stonemark Group , an Atlanta, Georgia based multifamily management and investment firm . The terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Stonemark will continue to manage the property. Recently, the company opened the first phase of its ONE Plan on- campus replacement housing at the Northern Michigan University (NMU). This development, named The Woods in Marquette, MI, has 417 beds in a living-learning community. The property boasts ample amenities , including Internet and Wi-Fi, classrooms, study rooms, TV lounges and laundry facilities. The entire $75.4- million project is, however, slated for final delivery in 2018. The development will include 1,229 beds.   The questions haunting relatives and friends of an Austin, Minn., man shot and killed by Minnetonka police may remain unanswered for months. The Hennepin County Sheriff ’s Office is investigating the officer-involved shooting of Michael Tray, 27, in an apartment parking garage on Wednesday, but in similar cases, it’s taken months before details are publicly released. It was the first officer- involved fatal shooting in Minnetonka history and at least the sixth such death statewide so far this year, according to the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Although Tray was carrying a gun, family and friends say the lack of details about what prompted police to shoot makes coping with his death and preparing for his funeral Tuesday all the more difficult. “My heart goes out to them [the Minnetonka police officers involved ],” Tray’s stepfather, Jim Greer, of Austin, said Friday, “but on the other hand, my 27-year-old stepson is dead. … I don’t understand.” Police were called to the ...

On the morning that Alfonso Maldonado Silva was set to argue his first case before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena, Ca., he was too nervous to even drink a glass of juice for breakfast. So he decided to head to court early to review the case one last time. He said a short prayer asking for wisdom, then he showered, dressed in a neatly pressed gray suit , and on an overcast morning last April, headed out the door with his evidence binder in hand. He had been up since 5 a.m. Maldonado, a third- year law student at Western State College of Law in Orange County, had left nothing to chance. This would be his first time arguing a case in court before any judge.
