The Many Lies and Mysteries of USC’s Josh Shaw

Josh Shaw is the man who fell to earth. From a second- or third-story balcony, not in Palmdale, Calif., but near downtown Los Angeles , onto an unforgiving surface. From team captain for the University of Southern California (USC) football team to indefinitely suspended player . From hero to fabulist. At some point between last Saturday evening and Monday afternoon Shaw , a fifth-year senior and starting cornerback for the Trojans, found his way into the training room in the John McKay Center on USC’s campus. The Palmdale, Ca. native required treatment after suffering high-ankle sprains in both legs. And at some point before entering the McKay Center, Shaw concocted a lie – an elaborate and heroic tale– to explain how those injuries had been sustained. Shaw’s story, not unlike its author, eventually landed with a mighty thud. “I made up a story about this fall that was untrue,” Shaw said Wednesday in a statement released through his recently hired attorney , Donald Etra. “I was wro...

Bakersfield apartment rental prices decline | News

A new report says apartment rental prices in Bakersfield, already among the very lowest in the state, have gotten even cheaper during the last 12 months. Rental data company Zumper reported the median price of a one- bedroom apartment in Bakersfield went for $650 per month in July, a decline of 1.5 percent from a year before. The state’s median — the point at which half the apartments rented for more and half cost less — was listed as $1,600, almost 1 1/2 times more than Bakersfield’s. Zumper said the most expensive city to rent in was San Francisco, where the median one-bedroom cost $3,500 per month. Bakersfield was the only one of California’s 10 largest cities where rents actually fell during the past year, Zumper reported . By comparison, July rent prices in San Francisco were up 12.9 percent year over year. In Santa Monica, which ranked fifth with a one-bedroom median of $2,450, rents climbed 2.5 percent since July 2014. Only two cities on Zumper’s list of 94 had one- bedroom ...

A rendering of San Pedro Public Market Image courtesy LA Waterfront Alliance The redevelopment of Ports O' Call Village has been decades in the making. The village opened in 1963 with cobblestone streets, souvenir and gift shops and seafood restaurants. Now there are plans to change the New England- style seaside village into the modern steel and glass San Pedro Public Market . In 2013, the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners called for the redevelopment of the waterfront site , and in 2016 the board approved a 50-year lease for an expansion of the village in the style of San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. Mike Galvin is the Director of Waterfront and Commercial Real Estate at the Port of Los Angeles. "Part of the [Port of LA's] mission there is to make the waterfront accessible to the public and we view through this development we will really do that on a very large scale by creating this half a mile promenade down the main channel of the Port of Los An...

Developer plans walkable neighborhood in Newport Beach

Uptown Newport Village will replace two industrial buildings with a walkable neighborhood of shops, restaurants, parks and upscale housing. Newport Beach, one of Southern California's most affluent cities, is about to transform an industrial area near John Wayne Airport into a distinctly urban community of homes and shops. Uptown Newport Village will replace a pair of aging industrial buildings on 25 acres near the airport with a walkable neighborhood of shops, restaurants, parks and upscale homes and apartments, according to Shopoff Group, an Irvine developer. Mayor Rush N. Hill, who is an architect, said he is excited about the project and pleased that it will be a dense neighborhood by local standards. "It's a relatively new kind of product for us with respect to density and height," he said. "We look at this as a great stride forward in walkable communities. We think it's very appropriate for the area." The first phase of the project will cost ...

New Yorkers Are Fleeing To Los Angeles In Droves, Study Shows

Image
NEW YORK, NY — It's one of the oldest rivalries in American migration: New York vs. Los Angeles. For the better part of a century, residents of the nation's two largest metro areas have been defending their chosen kingdom and dismissing the other on an endless loop of judginess between kitty-corner coasts. Ew, the traffic! But the sunshine! But the subway! But the garbage! But the skyline! But the coastline! But the bustle! But the chill! In this tireless war of words, a clear winner has yet to emerge. But it's harder to argue against the numbers. Thousands of working professionals have relocated to Los Angeles County from New York City in the past year and a half, according to a series of monthly "workforce reports" released this spring and summer by the job- networking site LinkedIn (and spotted by LA Weekly). And it's not exactly a two-way street. Since early 2016, according to LinkedIn, around seven or eight out of every 10, 000 site users in LA report...
