Water Street Tampa unveils video showing downtown's transformation

TAMPA — Water Street Tampa, the sweeping, 50-plus acre redevelopment project in Tampa's urban core, has unveiled new images and video of what the downtown district will look like upon completion. Strategic Property Partners , the real estate firm backed by Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik and Bill Gates' Cascade Investment, hired more than a dozen architect and design firms to create the aesthetics of the Water Street Tampa district . SPP released a conceptual illustration video Tuesday that shows overhead and street-level views of what the new $3 billion development, which will have 3,500 new residences and 13 acres of new parks, will look like when it's done nearly a decade from now. Previous Coverage: Finally, Jeff Vinik's vision has a name: Water Street Tampa SPP is working with nine architectural firms and three interior design firms on the project, according to a press release. Luciano: Apartment complex to bring doormen back to Peoria - News - Journal Star

Phil Luciano Journal Star columnist @lucianophil Wanted: Doorman. That’s one of the employment opportunities arising at Stonewood Luxury Apartments , the planned 20- unit transformation of the old Julian Hotel, 724 SW Adams St . But the position might be hard to fill, if one of the requirements is experience, especially locally. Doormen, once an elegant staple of Peoria’s hotels and movie houses, became extinct here decades ago. “It’s something long forgotten,” says Kelly Petersen , who with his wife, Ashley, is developing Stonewood. I couldn’t helped but notice the news in this paper that the complex “will include a doorman.” I’m not the only one intrigued about that notion: Petersen (who with his wife owns ARMS/Absolute Risk Management Solutions, an East Peoria- based investment development company ) says he has been peppered with questions about the novelty. A doorman isn’t quite as anachronistic as, say, an ice man or milkman. But it’s certainly a throwback to Peoria’s...

SLO’s Madonna Plaza faces questions as American retail changes

Image
If you work in retail — or know someone who does — here’s a scary statistic: Between 20 percent and 25 percent of U.S. malls will close in the next five years, according to predictions from financial analysts. It’s not just jobs that are at stake; sales tax revenue used to pave roads, hire police and light up City Hall is in jeopardy, too. Topping the most vulnerable list: Generic indoor malls of the 1970s and ’80s that have fallen victim to changing consumer tastes and online shopping (thanks, Amazon). But standalone stores aren ’t immune from the downturn, as we’ve seen on the Central Coast. Consider, for example, the Madonna Plaza/SLO Promenade shopping area off Highway 101. The behemoth that once was Gottschalks and later, Forever 21, is vacant (though some of the space will be occupied by a Sprouts market). Other large spaces, including Sears , HomeTown Buffet and Staples, are vacant as well. Not that all the news is glum; major chains like Best Buy, Petco and Kohl’s continue t...
