Forum raises call for coalition to address growing problem in downtown Portland

Downtown business owners and residents told the Portland City Council on Wednesday night that problems caused by aggressive panhandlers , mentally ill people and individuals under the influence of drugs or alcohol have reached crisis proportions , and that steps must be taken quickly to preserve the vibrant atmosphere that has made Maine’s largest city a popular destination for tourists and new businesses. Councilors said that although mental illness , substance abuse and homelessness have been problems in Portland since the state began closing mental health institutions in the 1980s – putting people with severe mental health issues on the streets – the city will need help from the community and the state to ensure that members of society’s most vulnerable population get the help and services they need. Many of those people come to Portland, which has developed a reputation for providing shelter and services to those in need. “We’ve heard some very powerful testimony tonight ,” s...

Pamplin Media Group - Farm to Folk brings healthy food from Forest Grove to Portland homeless

Image
View Comments Local volunteers whip up healthy meals for Portland's 'houseless' -- along with a dollop of human connection If it weren't for Gales Creek farmer Lise Monahan and a bitterly cold night last winter, teens Katy Schlesser , Sarah Ornelas, and Heather Monahan wouldn 't have been beating eggs, grating cheese, and chopping parsley in the Forest Grove Senior and Community Center kitchen on a hot summer afternoon . Monahan was driving her organic goat dairy wares home from the Portland Farmer 's Market last January when she stopped at a traffic light and saw a few people sleeping outside. Huddled beneath sleeping bags under a doorway on the sidewalk, they had just cardboard between their bodies and the frozen ground. Remembering someone had frozen to death in Portland just days earlier, Monahan stopped to ask if she could give the sleepers a ride to a shelter. But when she called to find which shelters were available, she learned they were all ful...

by Lashay Wesley, KATU News Kevin Blodgett was homeless in Portland for eight years until he got help from the Department of Veterans Affairs . (KATU Photo) PORTLAND, Ore. —  Despite a pledge to end homelessness among veterans in Multnomah County, an Oregon Housing and Community Services point -in- time survey shows the number of homeless veterans hasn 't improved. The state conducted a survey of homeless individuals across the state to identify the number of homeless on one given night. According to the report, the number of homeless veterans in the state dropped by nine percent from 2015. It found there are 121 fewer homeless across the state. In Multnomah County, the numbers have stayed the same. In 2015, 417 homeless were counted. Earlier this year, 445 homeless were counted. In 2015, the city of Portland and Multnomah County pledged to end homelessness. Denis Theriault, a spokesperson for the Joint Office of Homeless Services for Portland and Multnomah County, told KATU New...

New Yorkers Are Fleeing To Los Angeles In Droves, Study Shows

Image
NEW YORK, NY — It's one of the oldest rivalries in American migration: New York vs. Los Angeles. For the better part of a century, residents of the nation's two largest metro areas have been defending their chosen kingdom and dismissing the other on an endless loop of judginess between kitty-corner coasts. Ew, the traffic! But the sunshine! But the subway! But the garbage! But the skyline! But the coastline! But the bustle! But the chill! In this tireless war of words, a clear winner has yet to emerge. But it's harder to argue against the numbers. Thousands of working professionals have relocated to Los Angeles County from New York City in the past year and a half, according to a series of monthly "workforce reports" released this spring and summer by the job- networking site LinkedIn (and spotted by LA Weekly). And it's not exactly a two-way street. Since early 2016, according to LinkedIn, around seven or eight out of every 10, 000 site users in LA report...
