Thinking Brooklyn but Deciding for Long Island City

Maintenance problems abounded. Mr. Hunt used a pan to collect the rainwater dripping through the ceiling, graduated to a bucket and, when that proved insufficient, a trash can. Last winter, some of his favorite shirts were soaked by rainwater. “It was imperative for my sanity to move,” he said. Photo LONG ISLAND CIT Y Along the waterfront on Center Boulevard, the many rental buildings were new, but not new enough. Credit Sasha Maslov for The New York Times He envisioned his new place as airy and clean, but also warm and inviting. “Telling a real estate agent your vision is not as clear as making a list,” he said. So he made one, including light, views and a rent of around $2,000 a month for a studio or one-bedroom. Using five apps — StreetEasy, Trulia, PadMapper, Naked Apartments and Zumper — he went to work. “I felt frantic about it,” he said. He contacted every agent who seemed to have a suitable listing. “The idea was zero fidelity.” He planned to remain in Greenpoint. But the fe...

Asian American Writers' Workshop - Beyond Gifted Hands: Reimagining Fair Housing in New York City

How the fight against displacement calls for New York City’s Asian immigrant communities to defect from the “ model minority ” narrative. Media Gallery When NYU sophomore Sam Kim attended a rally outside Manhattan’s City Hall in March, he didn’t think that he would be ushered into the spotlight. Kim had learned of the rally through the local housing organization CAAAV (Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence), which called on New Yorkers to oppose President Trump ’s proposed $6.2 billion cut to the 2018 budget of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This cut would dramatically reduce federal funding for New York City public housing , which currently provides rent-subsidized homes to 600,000 New Yorkers. Along the City Hall steps , Kim and two fellow student organizers joined a rare gathering of tenants from otherwise disparate peripheries of the city. Asian immigrants from Chinatown and Queens stood alongside Black and Latino residents of Brooklyn and the Bronx...

Homeless group close to suit over bike path plan in Uptown

Image
The more than three dozen people who live in tents under the Lake Shore Drive bridges at Wilson and Lawrence avenues know better than anyone that the structures need repair. Concrete from the Depression-era bridges is crumbling onto the sidewalks and streets below, posing a deadly hazard to tent-dwellers, as well as motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. So it may seem strange that a homeless advocacy group might sue the city to stop bridge repairs before they start in mid-September. But attorneys for the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless want to stop the city's plans to put bike paths on the wide sidewalks under the bridges, which the coalition said would permanently drive the homeless out. "If they put the bike paths in, we ain't going to have room for our tents," said Thomas Gordon, 58, who lives under the Lawrence bridge. The sidewalks can currently accommodate both tents and pedestrians — bike paths would cut the space. The dilemma highlights two local tren...

Eagle Rock Apartments of Carle Place - Apartments - 401 E Jericho Tpke, Carle Place, NY - Phone Number

7 401 E Jericho Tpke Carle Place , NY 11514 (516) 246-6174 My husband and I have been living at this eagle rock location for about a year and half now and we haven't had that many issues directly affecting us. This location is ideal, every highway is accessible within a mile radius along with the mall and multiple grocery stores . The exterior of the complex is well maintained, the lawn is always manicured which is nice. That being said, the complaints I do have revolve around maintenance. The laundry room conditions are horrendous, the machines are always breaking down and I found that the detergent doesn't always release into the machine so we resorted to using tide pods. I did the laundry today and found a trail of dead ants by the washing machine, which could have easily been cleaned up by the maintenance crew but it wasn't. It costs two dollars to use the washing machine and another two to use the dryer and you would think that the room would be somewhat maintaine...

Gap Slims Between Low- and High-Income Homeownership Rate

Individuals with low incomes have historically struggled to become homeowners, cut off from the opportunity to not only build wealth through equity, but also establish an appreciating, long-term asset. New research now shows the homeownership rate in the lowest income tier is catching up to that of high-earners, edging closer since the onset of the recovery. According to a study by Trulia, the homeownership rate of high-income households is 2.3 times the rate of low-income households: 77 percent versus 34.9 percent. The disparity, however, has thinned since 2012, when the homeownership rate of high-income households was 2.4 times higher than that of low-income households. The trend largely follows past housing cycles , with the gap narrowing during upswings and widening during downturns. The study demonstrates the margin is more pronounced in major metropolitan areas , where the homeownership rate of high-income households is 79.3 percent, compared to the homeownership rate of low-inc...

Check out the NYC sites featured in Netflix’s ‘Defenders’

The working title was fittingly “Group Therapy.” Perhaps in a bid to throw rabid superhero fans off the trail, signs posted on streets denoting work on Marvel’s latest series, “The Defenders,” carried the fake moniker. The series, which was shot last winter and debuted Friday on Netflix, unites all of the heroes from the platform’s existing Marvel shows into one superteam. And in true Marvel fashion , the teammates do not always get along, occasionally bickering like Washington politicians — hence the winking “Group Therapy” title. Through the eight episodes, Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Iron Fist (Finn Jones) and Daredevil (Charlie Cox) do cooperate long enough to take on a villainous group menacing New York City: the mystical ninja order known as the Hand, led by Sigourney Weaver. As with previous Marvel shows , New York is front and center. Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel television, has said that the city is so important to the atmosphere of the shows, it...
