Lubbock leasing: Hub City sees continued apartment growth as more renting | Lubbock Online

When Tigris Holding Company bought land on 34th Street and Milwaukee Avenue about eight years ago, they felt they were on to something good. “They had recently paved Milwaukee , and just studying traffic counts out there, we just felt like it was a good growth area in Lubbock,” said Ty Craft, a directing principal at Tigris. Leasing recently opened for Tigris’s third complex in the area, El Mirador. If their nearby properties - Escondido and Elm Creek - are any indication, the newest multi-family concept is sure to fill soon. Craft said Elm Creek, a single-story facility, is almost always at full capacity and has a lengthy wait list . This is is a trend throughout Lubbock, according to recently collected ALN Apartment Data . In June, apartment occupancy was at almost 91 percent, suggesting nearly every available unit is full. This rate has stayed consistently high through the first half of 2017, according to monthly data from ALN. Suzanne Comer, executive officer with the Lubbock ...

Jackie Kennedy Onassis’ younger sister Lee Radziwill has listed her longtime chic Paris apartment for sale, asking 3.4 million euros. Located on the sixth floor of a building dating back to 1890, the 1,625-square-foot, three- bedroom apartment comes with a large balcony that overlooks Avenue Montaigne  and boasts a bird’s eye view of the Eiffel Tower. A source told the New York Post that the 84-year-old, who was once European royalty thanks to her second marriage to a Polish prince, doesn’t spend enough time at the apartment any more, and prefers to stay at the Plaza AthĂ©nĂ©e. Once an interior designer to the super wealthy, the socialite decorated the pied-Ă -terre herself, with features including a spacious light- filled living room with built-in bookshelves and mint green curtains framing French doors that open out to the balcony. There is also a large gilded mirror over the fireplace in the living area, a large table with stacks of coffee-table books and a lot of patterned...

Kayonnia Parker, 2 is on the left. KALAMAZOO -- Ricardo Anderson had one thing on his mind Wednesday -- a fresh start. "We're done. We were already talking about leaving," the 30-year-old, hours after being burned out of his apartment, said of plans to move his family to Rockford, Ill., to be closer to relatives. In November, raw sewage leaked into the lower level of the residence at Fox Ridge Apartments that Anderson shared with his two children and fiancee. On Wednesday, hours after watching a fire heavily damage his apartment building in the complex at 1509 Alamo Hills Drive , he was ready to pull up stakes. "This is like the straw that broke the camel's back," Anderson said. No one was hurt, but 29 ...

Squabble over barbecue pit fire led to neighbor's stabbing, fatal encounter with St. Louis police | Law and order

Image
ST. LOUIS • New details are emerging from police about the neighbor dispute that brought police Tuesday to the home of Kenny “Kiwi” Herring, who was then killed in a confrontation with officers. In court documents filed in St. Louis Circuit Court , police say Herring had accused a downstairs neighbor that morning of starting a fire on a back deck. Herring then stabbed that neighbor after Herring’s partner provided the kitchen knife, police say. Herring was fatally shot by police after Herring, in a scuffle with officers, cut an officer on the arm. Herring’s partner, Kristy Lynn Thompson , is jailed on assault charges for handing the knife to Herring. And the neighbor who was stabbed was hospitalized with stab wounds. The victim suffered a collapsed lung in the attack, police say. The two officers who fired the shots are on administrative leave, as is protocol, while the case is being reviewed. +10  Kenny "Kiwi" Herring, in a photo posted on social med...

The Vanilla Villa: Orsini Apartments, Cesar Chavez Avenue & Figueroa Street, Downtown

Image
Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 9 a.m. Figueroa Street , Downtown" /> Wendy Gilmartin Even before construction crews broke ground on the Orsini apartment complex back in 2001, its developers made themselves locally infamous for wriggling out of an inclusionary zoning provision that requires new residential apartment developments to contain at least 15 percent affordable units . (Attorneys on the developer's side argued the provision would cause "difficulties and hardships" by lowering the owners' cash flow.) Flash forward 11 years later (and two additional phases and two enormous additional buildings later) and the Orsini apartments at Figueroa Street and Cesar Chavez Avenue downtown are currently more than 15 percent vacant. They also host one of the hottest parking garages in town for car break-ins and petty criminal activity . Aside from its politically contentious past and crime riddled present , what makes the Orsini " apartment resort "...

What Makes This NYC Co-op One of the City’s Most Exclusive

It’s hard to stand out in New York’s microcosm of over-the- top real estate , where eight-figure listings are a dime a dozen and co-op boards are as steely as they come. One building, however, has managed to take the cake year after year as one of the city’s most exclusive addresses: 834 Fifth Avenue. The co-op, which sits on Fifth Avenue between 64th and 65th streets overlooking the Central Park zoo , was once described by the New York Observer as “the most pedigreed building on the snobbiest street in the country’s most real estate–obsessed city.” How does a building in a city of millions of buildings get this distinction? As one of its units continues to hold the distinction of most expensive apartment for sale in New York, we thought it was time to understand why. Venice has become an epicenter of Los Angeles’ struggle over short-term rentals. Call it the Airbnb problem

Image
On any summer weekend, Venice Beach is the ultimate urban beach carnival : exhilarating, loud, funky and diverse. No wonder Ocean Front Walk is one of the state’s premier attractions: It’s amazing entertainment and it’s 100% free. But unlike other tourist spots — say Disneyland or Universal CityWalk — Venice is still primarily a residential neighborhood . Because of that, Venice has become an epicenter of Los Angeles’ struggle over short-term rentals, what you might call the Airbnb Problem. To get a sense of it, I took what some local housing activists have dubbed a “Lost Housing” tour of Venice on Saturday afternoon. Over the course of four hours, I visited half a dozen buildings on or very close to the Boardwalk that have been converted, without permits, from long- term rental apartments to short-term rentals, or — yes — let’s call them what they really are: hotels. If you are wondering why the rental housing market in a place like Venice Beach is so tight, look no further than y...

GLENDALE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - The Red Cross says dozens of people were evacuated after rains and flood waters damaged units at two different apartment buildings in Glendale. According to a spokesperson for the Red Cross, flood waters damaged an apartment complex near 63rd Avenue and Glendale -- at least eight units were damaged. At least 25 people and their pets had to be evacuated from that complex and they have been displaced at this time.  A second apartment complex near 67th Avenue and Glendale was also damaged.  Red Cross workers first learned of problems at one apartment complex at 3 a.m., and then got word of problems at the second one at about 4:30 a.m. The Red Cross says the total number of people evacuated from the two buildings is likely to increase.

Toddler Hospitalized in Critical Condition After Falling From Fifth Story Apartment Window

A toddler was hospitalized in critical condition after falling from a fifth-story window of a Park La Brea apartment in an incident police deemed an accident. It happened about 7:45 p.m. Monday at an apartment building at 360 South Burnside Avenue , Sgt. E. Vialta of the Los Angeles Police Department 's Wilshire Station said. A window was left open and the 2-year-old fell out, Vialta said. The boy suffered injuries to his face and body and required surgery at a hospital. Detectives from the LAPD's Child Abuse Unit were investigating the fall, Vialta said. "Many of us have asked about the safety of the windows," said Heidi Albee, a neighbor and mother of two boys under 4 years old. At a tower across the way, Albee's windows in her 12th floor apartment open and close with a crank. There are screens she and other residents say they can purchase to cover their windows. "If a child was running and wanted to just run into this, I am not certain that this woul...

Three stories of hardship put a face on L.A.'s exorbitant housing costs

Image
In Reseda, an elderly couple fret about where they will go at the end of the month, when they are forced out of the one-room apartment they have lived in for 29 years. In Tujunga, a retired woman lives in a backyard shed, treating her high blood pressure with tea made from her garden and bathing in an outdoor tub with water heated by the sun. In Arleta, a supermarket employee rents a makeshift room in a house that is home to 10 people, and often waits in a long line to shower before work. I didn't set out last Wednesday to tie these stories together; I was following leads in search of the small dramas that play out daily, beyond the headlines, in homes that do not make the Hot Property column . I traveled the 101 and the 405, the 118 and the 210, and the stories intersected as the highways do, here in a land where all too often plans fall apart, and the daily challenge is to adapt, to endure, to survive. :: "Help!!!!" Caroline Malloy pleaded in an email to me. Her pa...
