LA River-adjacent apartment complex planned for Reseda

A major residential project could be on the way to Reseda, bringing 205 new apartments to the area. The six- story development is planned for 6670 North Reseda Boulevard , just a half-block from the LA River, and will replace a cluster of commercial and office buildings that now stand on the project site. Plans published last week on the Los Angeles Department of City Planning website show that the project will also include 5,932 square feet of commercial space , along with a total of 307 parking spaces for cars and 238 spots for bikes in a two-level garage. 18 of the units in the complex will be set aside for very low-income tenants. In return, the developer has asked for an increase in the project’s allowable height and density. A total of 24,188 square feet of open space will be included in the finished complex . The project is similar to another six- story development proposed right across the street in 2014. That complex, called the WaterMark, is set to include 254 units of h...

Construction finally begins on long-planned Logan Square apartment block

More than three years after the proposal for new apartments and retail at 2340 N. California Avenue first surfaced, the project’s developers have finally broken ground . According to developers Hunt Investment Management and Savoy Development , workers have finally begun constructing a new six-story building at the site. The project, which currently does not have a formal name or branding yet, will eventually deliver 138 apartments , 44 vehicle parking spaces , and roughly 9, 000 square feet of ground floor retail space to the booming Logan Square neighborhood by fall 2018. While it was proposed around the same time as other nearby transit-oriented developments that have been completed and open for at least several months, the plan to develop on California had experienced a number of alterations and setbacks since it was introduced in April 2014. Originally dubbed “California Studios,” the plan from Savoy Development sought a dense 66-unit project with 63 units being studio apar...

The Tapiz at Mariposa apartment project , part of Denver Housing Authority ’s Mariposa District redevelopment project in the Alma Lincoln Park neighborhood . (Kevin J. Beaty/Denverite) People who are now happy to call the Mariposa District home would have tried to avoid the area in the not so distant past. “The projects came in here in 1952,” said Bob Cordova, a resident at the Tapiz at Mariposa. “This was the meanest goddamn area of Denver growing up, and it only got worse.” Cordova said he moved to the 100-unit Tapiz apartment building not long after the eight- story senior housing project was completed in 2011. “It feels safe in the area now,” Cordova said. The Tapiz was the first of eight redevelopment phases that Denver Housing Authority undertook to demolish and replace its 250- unit South Lincoln Park Homes . Several residents refer to the former complex as “the projects.” South Lincoln Homes complex along Navajo Street before they were demolished for the Mariposa Distr...

(Photo: Chris Caldwell / The Spectrum & Daily News) Buy Photo Suspended high above St. George’s urban center,  hiding in plain sight atop a mesa, is some of highest-value real estate in one of the county’s fastest-growing cities. For the better part of seven years, it mostly lay empty. The “ Ridgetop Complex ,” as it has formally been known since 2011 when the city relocated its airport, stretches for more than a mile north-to-south, carrying 155 acres of developable flat land with unencumbered viewscapes along the land that once carried the runway. Once pegged for pricey cliffside homes , schools, shops and all the trappings of a premium mixed-use neighborhood, it has instead been limited in recent years to the occasional hobby race , concert or other event that requires a large open space . It’s sometimes used by law...

The unlikely story of the undocumented attorneys fighting for the lives of their undocumented clients – ThinkProgress

On the morning that Alfonso Maldonado Silva was set to argue his first case before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena, Ca., he was too nervous to even drink a glass of juice for breakfast. So he decided to head to court early to review the case one last time. He said a short prayer asking for wisdom, then he showered, dressed in a neatly pressed gray suit , and on an overcast morning last April, headed out the door with his evidence binder in hand. He had been up since 5 a.m. Maldonado, a third- year law student at Western State College of Law in Orange County, had left nothing to chance. This would be his first time arguing a case in court before any judge. So he had arrived the night before to stay in a Pasadena hotel to avoid the clogged commute from his Corona apartment during rush-hour. The only thing on the 28-year-old’s mind was the law. Much was riding on this case. Maldonado and his fellow law student , Cristel Martinez Medina , were representing an undocumente...
