How to rent your home out on Airbnb

Thinking of taking in paying guests? Three veteran Vancouver hosts share tricks of the trade Emily Plommer knew from her own experience staying at Airbnbs that it was frustrating to rent an apartment with a full kitchen and discover that there wasn’t so much as a salt shaker or bottle of cooking oil in the cupboards. So when Plommer, an avid traveller and then 26-year-old women’s studies grad, decided to make a living through hosting two years ago, she made sure the rental suite in her house in Vancouver’s Strathcona neighbourhood was well provisioned. Pots and pans and utensils. Basic cooking supplies , like oil and some spices. Milk and cereal. Coffee beans. Fresh fruit. Eggs. Then she found that she was making a lot of banana bread with the leftover, disintegrating fruit or eating the cereal herself. “It was funny how people would book a place like this and then eat nothing at home,” Plommer says. “In the end, I just asked, ‘Will you be eating breakfast here?’ before leaving things...

Pet spas? Coffee bars? Colorado Springs apartment complexes take amenities to new levels

When Amber and Lyle Drones were looking for a new apartment last summer, they wanted a pet-friendly place to accommodate Zarra, their 18-month-old Boston terrier-pug mix. After they scouted about 50 apartment complexes , the couple - both stationed at Fort Carson - settled on the Mesa Ridge Apartments in Fountain. It wasn't just the complex's proximity to the Army post. The Drones were especially attracted to Mesa Ridge because of two of its amenities: a dog park where Zarra can run and play with other dogs, and a pet "spa" - a free, fully equipped dog -washing area that's more convenient than a grooming salon and easier to use than one's own bathtub. "The newer apartments, they're all pretty evenly priced ," Amber said. "But those are two things that they offered that other apartment complexes didn 't. That set it apart for us. In our eyes, we were like, 'That's where we should go'. " Apartment amenities used to me...

Reno rent market at record-high prices, near-zero vacancy

RENO, Nev. (AP) — It's a journey that most people eventually take. Fifteen years ago , Anne Carte decided to leave the familiar comforts of home and family to move out on her own. For Carte, who was 20 years old at the time, moving to the Biggest Little City from San Jose, California, represented an exciting and crucial juncture in her life. "I moved to Reno to grow up and be an adult," Carte said. The year 2002 had its fair share of memorable moments. That same year, "Star Wars: Episode II" debuted in theaters, Tiger Woods won the 66th Masters Tournament and "American Idol" premiered on television. One thing Carte specifically remembers was the cost of rent. Back then, the monthly rate for Carte's first studio in Sparks was only $495. For a young person who just moved out of home and landed an entry-level job at Target, an affordable place to stay was not a luxury. It was a b...
