Forsyth Park apartment complex vote may be reversed

A vote in support of a controversial 114-unit, five- story apartment complex next to Forsyth Park could be reversed this week — or area residents hoping the project is blocked could just get their hopes dashed for a second time. One Savannah City Council member is now having second thoughts about rezoning the project site bounded by Drayton Street , East Bolton Street , Abercorn Street and East Bolton Lane . After voting to approve Delray Ventures’ rezoning request for the project on Aug. 3, Savannah Alderman Tony Thomas announced on Facebook the next day that he plans to call for the 5-3 vote to be reconsidered during Thursday’s meeting. Thomas said Monday that he wants to hear more information about the project and see if the developer would be open to reducing the scale of the building, which he now believes is too big for the area. “I’ve never ever called for reconsideration of a vote up until now because I have reservations and am not afraid to go out and limb and reconsider...

South Korea’s once-rigorous civilian air-raid drills grow lax

SEOUL, South Korea — Once or twice a year, activity on the streets of South Korea’s capital freezes as a wailing siren marks a nationwide drill aimed at preparing against a North Korean attack . Cars stop on roads. Pedestrians move into buildings and subway stations. Government buildings are evacuated. The scenes during the latest air-raid drill on Wednesday are remarkable for turning parts of this usually bustling city into a ghost town. But a closer look raises questions about whether the exercises are adequately preparing South Koreans while the threat from North Korea’s nuclear and missile program grows . For many, there’s no real training, just people standing around in schoolyards or other gathering spots, staring into their smartphones, chatting amiably or just looking bored or frustrated. Many schools don’t participate in the air-raid drills and those that do often escort children outside. Leaving their buildings would be a good idea during earthquakes, but a terrible deci...

Statement by National Low Income Housing Coalition President and CEO Diane Yentel on the “Rent Relief Act of 2017”

Image
WASHINGTON (August 22, 2017) – (RealEstateRama) — The “ Rent Relief Act of 2017,” legislation announced today by U.S. Representative Joe Crowley (D-NY), would provide much- needed resources directly to struggling families and individuals to help them afford to keep a roof over their heads. The refundable tax credit would put more money in the pockets of the lowest income families , at a time when their wages have flatlined and housing costs have skyrocketed. Millions of families – including those with the greatest needs – would no longer be forced to make impossible choices between paying for rent and covering other basic needs like food and healthcare. The lack of affordable housing in the U.S. has reached crisis proportions . The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Housing , a report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), shows there is a shortage of 7.4 million affordable and available rental homes for America’s 11. 4 million extremely low -income (ELI) households, ...

Poverty is moving out of the city center

Image
The number of high-poverty neighborhoods in Colorado Springs rose from six to 22 between 2000 and 2015, a study conducted by the U.S. Census and published by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University has found. In the Springs, low-income neighborhoods used to occupy high- density urban areas , but, following a recent national trend , the study found that the city’s poor have increasingly dispersed into the city’s outer edges: fragmented neighborhoods with potentially limited access to public transportation or support programs. The study did not specify what outlying neighborhoods the growth has occurred in, but defined “high poverty” areas as those where 20 percent or more of the population lives below the federal poverty line . See image below . click to enlarge As more neighborhoods are becoming classified as high-poverty, individual families in Colorado Springs are experiencing noticeable financial struggles as well. According to a 2016 study by the Pew...

Think Montford Park is changing now? Wait until this beautiful new trail gets built

Image
When you’re hanging out at Park Road Shopping Center or partying on Montford today, you barely even notice that there’s a creek nearby. But in a few years’ time, this hidden creek will be one of the newest crown jewels of Charlotte. The city is finalizing plans and designs for an extension of the Cross Charlotte Trail through this section of the Park Road corridor . Construction is expected to follow in about 18 months time. When it’s done, thickets of bramble and vines will give way to public parks and greenways with Little Sugar Creek as their centerpiece. The result will be a radically different vibe for a fast-growing part of town. Development has already ramped up in this area of Park Road, between the shopping center and Tyvola Road. The neighborhood has even given itself a new name: Montford Park. But as the trail gets underway, all manner of new apartments, offices and restaurants will sprout up around it to take advantage of the green space it provides. Think the area is ...

Amazon makes Seattle America’s biggest company town

Amazon’s extraordinary growth has turned Seattle into the biggest company town in America. Amazon now occupies a mind-boggling 19 percent of all prime office space in the city, the most for any employer in a major U.S. city, according to a new analysis conducted for The Seattle Times. Amazon’s footprint in Seattle is more than twice as large as any other company in any other big U.S. city, and the e-commerce giant’s expansion here is just getting started. The swarms of 20-somethings crowding into South Lake Union every morning represent an urban campus that is unparalleled in the United States — and they have helped transform Seattle , for better or worse. Amazon’s rapid rise has fueled an economy that has driven up wages and lowered unemployment, but also produced gridlock on the roads and sky- high housing prices . And while Seattle’s booming economy is often attributed to a wide variety of factors, increasingly, it’s all about one company. Amazon now occupies more office space t...

New Yorkers Are Fleeing To Los Angeles In Droves, Study Shows

Image
NEW YORK, NY — It's one of the oldest rivalries in American migration: New York vs. Los Angeles. For the better part of a century, residents of the nation's two largest metro areas have been defending their chosen kingdom and dismissing the other on an endless loop of judginess between kitty-corner coasts. Ew, the traffic! But the sunshine! But the subway! But the garbage! But the skyline! But the coastline! But the bustle! But the chill! In this tireless war of words, a clear winner has yet to emerge. But it's harder to argue against the numbers. Thousands of working professionals have relocated to Los Angeles County from New York City in the past year and a half, according to a series of monthly "workforce reports" released this spring and summer by the job- networking site LinkedIn (and spotted by LA Weekly). And it's not exactly a two-way street. Since early 2016, according to LinkedIn, around seven or eight out of every 10, 000 site users in LA report...
