Poverty is moving out of the city center

Image
The number of high-poverty neighborhoods in Colorado Springs rose from six to 22 between 2000 and 2015, a study conducted by the U.S. Census and published by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University has found. In the Springs, low-income neighborhoods used to occupy high- density urban areas , but, following a recent national trend , the study found that the city’s poor have increasingly dispersed into the city’s outer edges: fragmented neighborhoods with potentially limited access to public transportation or support programs. The study did not specify what outlying neighborhoods the growth has occurred in, but defined “high poverty” areas as those where 20 percent or more of the population lives below the federal poverty line . According to a 2016 study by the Pew...

Three ways to address California's housing crisis immediately

Image
Last month, we cut ribbons on Talmadge Gateway and Cypress Apartments — two affordable-housing projects that will provide a combined 122 new homes in San Diego for struggling seniors and people who have been chronically homeless. At Talmadge Gateway, we met Marvina and Michael — two local seniors who expressed profound relief to finally have roofs over their heads and the chance to lead a stable life after years of instability. Projects like these are critical as housing has become increasingly unaffordable. Virtually every Californian can attest to the increased cost of living we have seen in recent years. Since 2000, the median rent in the San Diego region has spiked by 36 percent. However, the median household income for renters has risen just 4 percent. Our lowest- income earners spend nearly 70 percent of their income on housing and, to meet the current demand from the middle and working class, we would need to build 142,000 rental homes. The problem on its surface is supply-...

Citi Bike Sets Up Shop in Riis Houses, Hoping to Boost Low-Income Ridership

Image
(Photo: Citi Bike on Instagram) The operators of Citi Bike are set to open facilities in the Jacob Riis Houses in Alphabet City, a move that they hope will bring more low-income riders to the bike-share program and make it easier for existing users to score a ride. The new base of operations is located in what the New York City Housing Authority describes as “an existing facility in an underutilized space,” at 152-154 Avenue D. Motivate, the operators of Citi Bike, hope it will lead to a more balanced system, meaning no more showing up to stations to find there are no bikes to rent. Citi Bike general manager Kris Sandor also hopes it will help with community outreach. “We are again looking to support and engage with everybody, especially for ridership, but then also for our hiring practices,” Sandor said. “We’re really looking to make sure that we’re engaging with lower-income communities.” When it opens this fall, the 3,200-square-foot facility will accommodate bike repair , storag...

City Planning Commission that they reject the city's rezoning plan during a public hearing on August 23, 2017. " /> East Harlem Rezoning View Full Caption EAST HARLEM — The mayor is ignoring El Barrio residents ' input on rezoning the neighborhood, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer charged Wednesday afternoon . “Despite our clear recommendations, the administration is not taking the community’s plan seriously,” said Brewer during a public hearing on East Harlem's proposed rezoning . After a two-year process in which residents and local business owners came up with recommendations of what they'd like to see in the rezoning, city officials came up with their own plan that doesn't include those recommendations, Brewer told the City Planning Commission . Nearly 100 speakers signed up to talk during a five-hour meeting at 1 Centre St. Wednesday. To maintain some semblance of balance, commissioners took turns listening to five people in favor of ...

New Stonewood Townhomes planned | Local News

The popularity of the Windridge Townhomes west of Highway 281 and north of Faidley Avenue has resulted in a new set of townhomes being constructed in the very same LaRue Subdivision. "We actually have a Windridge I and Windridge II, and there are 58 apartments for those two projects, and they are completely occupied with a waiting list," said co- owner Cathy Mesner of Central City. "That's why we decided to build another project over there." Windridge caters to the 55-and-older population earning 60 percent or less of median income. The next project, called Stonewood Townhomes, will be open to the same clientele. It will be on the opposite side of the LaRue Subdivision, located west of Highway 281 and south of 13th Street. "We hadn't planned to do it, but there is such a strong need in the community for rentals and particularly for affordable rentals ," Mesner said, noting that Windridge has never had even a full month's vacancy in any ...

Reno rent market at record-high prices, near-zero vacancy

RENO, Nev. (AP) — It's a journey that most people eventually take. Fifteen years ago , Anne Carte decided to leave the familiar comforts of home and family to move out on her own. For Carte, who was 20 years old at the time, moving to the Biggest Little City from San Jose, California, represented an exciting and crucial juncture in her life. "I moved to Reno to grow up and be an adult," Carte said. The year 2002 had its fair share of memorable moments. That same year, "Star Wars: Episode II" debuted in theaters, Tiger Woods won the 66th Masters Tournament and "American Idol" premiered on television. One thing Carte specifically remembers was the cost of rent. Back then, the monthly rate for Carte's first studio in Sparks was only $495. For a young person who just moved out of home and landed an entry-level job at Target, an affordable place to stay was not a luxury. It was a b...
