96 Baxter Street via Google Street View The 13-story, 88- unit rental building for low- income seniors at 96 Baxter Street in Chinatown has opened its waiting list to new applicants this week for the first time in 25 years (h/t Lo-Down). Only people aged 62 and older (over 18 if they are mobility impaired) can apply. The units rent for  30 percent of one’s annual income ; studios are available to those earning less than $33,400 a year and one-bedroom to those earning less than $38,200. The waitlist originally contained over 3,000 names, a number which now stands at only a handful. Among the building’s current tenants, two are reportedly 108 years old. Beaty/Denverite) People who are now happy to call the Mariposa District home would have tried to avoid the area in the not so distant past. “The projects came in here in 1952,” said Bob Cordova, a resident at the Tapiz at Mariposa. “This was the meanest goddamn area of Denver growing up, and it only got worse.” Cordova said he moved to the 100-unit Tapiz apartment building not long after the eight- story senior housing project was completed in 2011. “It feels safe in the area now,” Cordova said. The Tapiz was the first of eight redevelopment phases that Denver Housing Authority undertook to demolish and replace its 250- unit South Lincoln Park Homes . Mangano announced that the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) has approved an economic compact that will assist a developer in building an apartment complex in Farmingdale, intended and operated for occupancy for persons 55 years of age or older. “This project will further the redevelopment efforts of the Village of Farmingdale as its works with its master plan to revive its downtown and will create new, much- needed housing options for seniors,” said Mangano. The compact, approved by the IDA at its Aug. 16 meeting, will assist Ronkonkoma- based Carlyle Building LLC in constructing an approximately 50,497-square foot, 3-1⁄2- story apartment building on vacant land at 776-780 Fulton St. The project would have 24 units, three one-bedroom apartments and 21 two-bedroom apartments.
