In 2013, the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners called for the redevelopment of the waterfront site , and in 2016 the board approved a 50-year lease for an expansion of the village in the style of San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. Mike Galvin is the Director of Waterfront and Commercial Real Estate at the Port of Los Angeles. "Part of the [Port of LA's] mission there is to make the waterfront accessible to the public and we view through this development we will really do that on a very large scale by creating this half a mile promenade down the main channel of the Port of Los An...

More than three years after the proposal for new apartments and retail at 2340 N. California Avenue first surfaced, the project’s developers have finally broken ground . According to developers Hunt Investment Management and Savoy Development , workers have finally begun constructing a new six-story building at the site. The project, which currently does not have a formal name or branding yet, will eventually deliver 138 apartments , 44 vehicle parking spaces , and roughly 9, 000 square feet of ground floor retail space to the booming Logan Square neighborhood by fall 2018. While it was proposed around the same time as other nearby transit-oriented developments that have been completed and open for at least several months, the plan to develop on California had experienced a number of alterations and setbacks since it was introduced in April 2014. History should unite us, not tear us apart

As a late- blooming Civil War buff , I have mixed feelings about the recently renewed national push to remove Confederate monuments across the nation. On one hand, the removal of hundreds of Confederate and related statues bears a troubling resemblance to efforts by Soviet dictator Josef Stalin or the Islamic State to selectively erase inconvenient history . But when President Donald Trump decided to weigh in on the side of preserving public Confederate icons as “beautiful,” my dilemma vanished. Trump managed to be for them in a way that turned me against them. “Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart with the removal of our beautiful statues and monuments,” he wrote in a series of tweets. “You can’t change history, but you can learn from it. Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson — who’s next? Washington, Jefferson? So foolish! Also the beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparabl...
