Cardiff Bay: What has 30 years of development achieved?

Image
Media playback is unsupported on your device Media caption What has been achieved in 30 years of redevelopment in Cardiff Bay? Future development of Cardiff Bay needs a more coordinated approach to ensure its success, the man behind its reinvention 30 years ago has said. Lord Crickhowell has hailed the overall regeneration of the former derelict docklands as a major success. But he is fiercely opposed to the latest plans to redevelop land for flats, including a 24-story building. Three decades after he sparked plans for one of the biggest overhauls the city has seen, what has been achieved? Image caption Cardiff Bay waterfront in 1977 - derelict before regeneration Once the epicentre of Wales' booming coal and export industries, by the 1980s, Cardiff Bay had become an abandoned wasteland of derelict docks and mudflats. A victim of a dramatic fall in trade following World War Two and competition from other ports saw its decline and a plan was put in place to bring it back to lif...

Elgin dedicating new park by Eastside Recreation Center Saturday

Elgin will be dedicating a new park Saturday next to the Eastside Recreation Center , put there to serve the neighborhood behind it and to be used with camp programs the city runs. "There's really not another playground in that neighborhood but for a small one at an apartment complex," Parks and Recreation Director Randy Reopelle said. Reopelle said the city had at one time been looking at another parcel of land in the area but plans didn't work out. The location next to the Eastside Recreation Center is a better one, Reopelle said, and it provides the center another asset. Facility Manager Mitch Lehman said work on the Woodview Park project began last fall. A mild winter helped get playground areas ready in time for summer camps, which recently concluded with school starting this week. Work recently finished on a picnic shelter, Lehman said, and all that remains to be done is setting up the actuator for a splash pad, which should be completed this week. Elgin ...

Los Alamos bungalow resort hotel killed by county's ag buffer, developer says | Local News

One of the developers who wanted to build a multimillion- dollar bungalow - style resort hotel in Los Alamos said the project has been killed by the agricultural buffer required by the Santa Barbara County Planning and Development Department. Thomas and Matthew Ryan hoped to construct a hotel consisting of 44 bungalows and a main reception and registration building on a 2.1- acre site located at the west end of Bell Street behind the Welcome to Los Alamos sign . Thomas Ryan said he wasn’t building the hotel as a moneymaking project but as a business he and Matthew could retire to that would improve the community and economy of Los Alamos. When it was introduced to the community at a Los Alamos Planning Advisory Committee meeting , the reaction was generally favorable, although residents wanted a few changes and requests the Ryans were willing to meet, including giving residents a “membership” allowing them to use the pool and related facilities for free. But Thomas Ryan said the...

Meridian boom brings more retail, housing, people and challenges

Image
Bruce Chatterton moved to Meridian from Boise more than four years ago. The “room to grow” that is Meridian’s essence made him want to live and work there. Now the city’s community development director , Chatterton says it’s also been “fun seeing a small, somewhat quiet downtown become a place people want to hang out.” Meridian still has plenty of room to spread out, and that’s good, because its population is booming. It was the 13th-fastest-growing city in the U.S. last year. And it’s not just about Meridian. The growth is changing the whole Treasure Valley , affecting traffic, housing, health care, education and retail. The 2016 U.S. Census estimates put Meridian ’s population at nearly 96,000. The Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho (Compass) estimates today ’s population at just more than 98,000. That’s a tenfold jump since 1990.   The growth seems unlikely to look to slow anytime soon, says Compass planner and demographics specialist Carl Miller , who lives in Meri...

Bold new plan re-envisions Park and Portland avenues in downtown Minneapolis

In the 1920s, you could live on the edge of downtown off Park or Portland Avenue S. and never need to own a car. That’s because as much as a generation earlier, Park and Portland served as anchors for a swank residential neighborhood south of 10th Street, complete with tree- lined side streets , small hotels, townhouses and high-end apartments for professionals, many of them designed by leading architects. Well into the 1940s, this part of downtown was very much a neighborhood with networks of long-term residents and nearby cultural institutions , theaters and churches, as well as shops and restaurants. Today, there’s little reason to get out of your car, aside from the new Commons park by U.S. Bank Stadium. So many of the once-grand buildings were lost in the postwar flight to suburbia. In their place was left acres of parking lots and drive-though banks. But a walkable neighborhood is worth bringing back . And that’s what BKV Group hopes to do. The Minneapolis architecture, interi...
