NWGHA to participate in bed bug eradication trial | Local News

The Northwest Georgia Housing Authority has been selected to participate in a research trial of a new chemical product to get rid of bed bugs without displacing apartment dwellers for an extended period of time. The housing authority also approved a new “Working Preference” policy that will impact residents of five public housing complexes in Rome and Rockmart. Norman Pleger, the director of technical services for the housing authority , told the board of directors Wednesday the agency will be the only housing authority in Georgia to participate in the study being led by Professor Nina Jenkins at Pennsylvania State University . “It’s an all natural bio-insecticide,” Pleger said. “You don’t have to move out of the house, but they recommend that you do stay out of the house about four hours after the application.” Pleger said the treatment completely eradicates bed bugs within four to seven days. Federal report cites mistakes that led to deaths of two KC firefighters

Kansas City firefighters now take two simple safety steps that might have saved the lives of two colleagues in a 2015 building collapse . The steps were among the recommendations in a federal report released Thursday . Emergency tones are sounded, as they were two years ago, when firefighters are ordered out of a collapse zone. But now heads are counted to make sure everyone got the message — which was not done before. Fire Chief Paul Berardi acknowledged those steps might have saved the lives of John Mesh and Larry Leggio, who perished at a fire scene on Independence Boulevard. The federal report cites a series of operational failures that contributed to the firefighters’ deaths. The report said the two men should not have been in an alley next to the three-story building after all personnel were directed to pull back because of fears the walls would collapse. Six minutes after that order was given, they died in an avalanche of bricks. Poor communication and the failure to establi...

The Most Affordable Neighborhoods in NYC for Recent College Graduates

Anyone who's ever lived in—or had dreams of moving to—New York City knows it to be two things: One, it's unlike anywhere else, and two, it's almost absurdly expensive. Making it work here is already difficult, but add super high rent prices (with basically little to no space) and it makes things even more challenging. Unsurprisingly, since entry-level jobs come with entry-level salaries, it's even harder for recent graduates to find a place to call home in the Big Apple. But, plenty of people do make it work—you just have to know where to look (and, of course, be really smart about budgeting). So, where are the more affordable neighborhoods? According to a recent Street Easy report , new grads and entry-level employees will have the best luck looking in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, and Crown Heights (these three neighborhoods are in Brooklyn and take spots No. 1, 2, and 4, respectively) as well as Astoria, Queens (at No. 3) and Washington Heights in Manhattan roun...

USC’s Shaw admits he made up hero story

LOS ANGELES – The heroic tale of USC cornerback Josh Shaw rescuing his nephew from drowning turned out to be a lie. What exactly happened that night, causing Shaw to injure both of his ankles, remains unclear. Shaw admitted to school officials Wednesday afternoon that he fabricated the story posted on USC’s website, ending a two-day whirlwind of rumors and speculation. Shaw was suspended indefinitely from all team activities. “We are extremely disappointed in Josh,” USC coach Steve Sarkisian said in a statement. “He let us all down. As I have said, nothing in his background led us to doubt him when he told us of his injuries, nor did anything after our initial vetting of his story. “I appreciate that Josh has now admitted that he lied and has apologized. Although this type of behavior is out of character for Josh, it is unacceptable. Honesty and integrity must be at the center of our program. I believe Josh will learn from this. I hope that he will not be defined by this incident.” ...
