96 Baxter Street via Google Street View The 13-story, 88- unit rental building for low- income seniors at 96 Baxter Street in Chinatown has opened its waiting list to new applicants this week for the first time in 25 years (h/t Lo-Down). Only people aged 62 and older (over 18 if they are mobility impaired) can apply. The units rent for  30 percent of one’s annual income ; studios are available to those earning less than $33,400 a year and one-bedroom to those earning less than $38,200. The waitlist originally contained over 3,000 names, a number which now stands at only a handful. Among the building’s current tenants, two are reportedly 108 years old. My friend and I stayed in Unit 5, a two bedroom split level apartment for 5 ngts this trip,originally only booking four. After staying in this same apartment four years ago, we were very happy to book again. Alison and David are wonderful hosts and make sure that the units are comfortable and clean.There is a washing machine in the bathroom,a small kitchen and dining area and main bedroom on the top level. The loungeroom and second bedroom are on the bottom level.Great views of the Derwent River and Tasman Bridge from the small patio area . The bridge is a spectacular sight all lit up at night.It's a quick trip to Lindisfarne from the airport with the huge Eastlands Shopping Center on the lefthand side just before the Lindisfarne turnoff.The city with the lovely wharf area is less than a 10 min drive away.We enjoyed our stay here in Hobart and will definately book again. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City police are investigating after a shooting early Wednesday morning sent one person to the hospital. Officers responded to the Stonewood Apartments near 87th and Blue Ridge just before 2 a.m. Officers at the scene told FOX 4 two people got into an argument, and one person shot the other. Firefighters were back at the scene of an apartment fire in Maple Ridge, B.C., Friday morning. The fire flared up again just as crews were preparing to leave around 6:45 a.m. PT. The two- alarm fire started in a bedroom on the third floor of the four-storey building on the 2300-block of McIntosh Avenue Thursday night . It was finally extinguished by 8:30 a.m. Fire crews said the fire spread quickly because there were no sprinklers in the building, but much of the damage was caused by fire hose water . Around 30 people were forced from the building, and an elderly couple and a dog had to be rescued by ladder off the balconies. One person was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. The residents were taken to a nearby hotel and some have already been told it could be months before they are able to move back in.
